A $9.9 million grant from the California Federal Lands Access Program will be used to improve 6.5 miles of Donner Pass Road (Old Highway 40) from Interstate 80 to the Truckee.

The grant was awarded to Nevada County, though part of the work will be done in Placer County.

Upgrades include Class II bicycle lanes, parking and pavement rehabilitation.

Work is slated to begin in 2016, with completion in 2019.
