Letter: Two cultures of Lake Tahoe

image_pdfimage_print

To the community,

We recently spent our first vacation in Lake Tahoe. From experience and observation this is what we found.

The culture of South Lake Tahoe is dominated by big time gambling, parties, drinking, restaurants, tourist traps, and lake activities. For sure action is the buzz word for tourist. There is only one main road around the lake and in South Lake traffic moves at a snail’s pace because of traffic volume and stoplights. Be ready to spend one to two hours in bumper to bumper traffic when driving through South Lake Tahoe.

In North Lake Tahoe we found a culture of laid back, kick back, relax, stop and smell the roses. A place to enjoy nature, fine food, beautiful beaches, dense forest, and scenic drives. As a professional AV producer-photographer of 40 years, I found North Lake Tahoe to be a photographer’s paradise.

From the Internet we happened to pick a lodge that perfectly matches the culture of North Lake Tahoe. In addition, this wonderful place to stay just happens to have the finest small gourmet restaurant in America. With two master chefs, they keep traffic low and food quality at the highest levels, better than five stars. For the ultimate taste bud experience and treat make reservations at The Rustic Lounge months early.

From Sacramento Ca take I80 to North Shore or I50 to South Shore… take your pick….easy

From Reno Nevada take I80 to North Shore or SR395 to Shore Shore easier!

    Problem solved

No question the North Shore experience an South Shore experience is different. But I am pretty sure they too have traffic and I know we have beaches, bike trails hiking trails etc. but the size and feel of the two are different. Consumers can have a choice.

Nothing like perpetuating the stereotypes. I don’t imagine they would have had the same impressions of the Lakeview area, or Camp Richardson. Scenic drive? How about Fallen Leaf, Fountain Place or just up to Emerald bay? (I hear photographers like that area a bit). And even from Stateline you have Van Sickle Park or the trail from Kahle to Nevada Beach. And traffic is not even remotely as backed up as trying to get from Fanny Bridge to Dollar Point on a weekend afternoon. And, of course there are many other examples. This letter defines the south shore culture the same as trying to define San Francisco culture as Fisherman’s wharf. Though it may say something about how the bulk of our marketing seems to be focused.

North Shore and South Shore people and communities are DIFFERENT!! REALLY!! Consumers can have a choice!!

OMG Carl and Robin Smith agree on something;)~

It’s always been that way….Always and will remain so.

Reno is different than Las Vegas

San Francisco is different than Los Angeles…

    Men are different than women

P.S. If you must cross the Lake in a hurry there are a lot of boats here. Fast ones and slow ones…again…there is a choice

P.P.S. John Kennedy, brother Bobby and their friend FRANK preferred the fast boats like Bill Harrah’s Thunderbird or the hydroplane Tahoe Miss. Mr Harrah preferred the South Shore;)~

I agree with Dave H’s observation that this “may say something about how the bulk of our marketing seems to be focused.” The pursuit of quantity of visitors versus quality of visitors appears to dominate the South Shore business mindset with putting more heads in the beds the primary goal.

“The pursuit of quantity of visitors versus quality of visitors appears to dominate the South Shore business mindset….”

SAY WHAT?? South Shore does not have QUALITY visitors?

Unbelievable you say crap like that! South Shore visitors are GREAT

    Robin Smith:

Do you have a reading comprehension problem or do you just like to make erroneous assumptions and conclusions for which you never take responsibility? Exactly where did I write that the South Shore does not have quality visitors? You’re the one who just wrote that. Your attempt at spin is laughable as always.

Have you never heard Tom Davis at City Council meetings say that we need to put more heads in the beds?

4-mer…… That quote was copied directly from your previous comment.

    Word for word.

2 lane weekend gridlock on north shore is common. It’s not uncommon on summer days or during snow storms.

    Robin Smith:

I did not write that the South Shore does not have QUALITY visitors–you wrote that. You put your own spin on what I wrote to fit your own purposes, or else you do in fact have a reading comprehension problem.

You earlier wrote that “Mr. Harrah preferred the South Shore” and that “From Sacramento Ca take I80 to North Shore or I50 to South Shore… take your pick…easy”. So were you saying that the South Shore is better since Bill Harrah preferred it and that people not liking the South Shore can just go somewhere else.” WOW! That’s insulting!

See Robin, I can put my own spin on what you write too.

I don’t think that you are a part of the problem in South Lake Tahoe, you are the problem. Please feel free to quote me directly on that.

People that do not like the South Shore, for whatever the reason, should go somewhere else…exactly what is wrong with that?
