El Dorado County crews rescue missing couple
By Ellen Garrison, Sacramento Bee
A Yuba City couple missing in snowy El Dorado County since Sunday were found in their snowbound SUV by searchers on Monday afternoon.
Rory and Susan Holloter, both in their 60s, were ferried to safety on snowmobiles. Both were in good condition, said sheriff’s department department spokeswoman Sgt. Tasha Thompson.
They were brought back to a command center on Wentworth Springs Road late Monday afternoon where they were reunited with waiting family members.
Two in a row – all wheel drive SUVs are great snow cars, but they enhance, not replace, basic driving skills and good sense. Both sadly lacking in these stories, and the winter is young.
It seems every year we hear of this type of rescue. A storm is forecast, and people go for a drive in the back country, only to get stuck. And of course they think their cell phone is a life preserver. People are just idiots and should be left to fend for themselves. Hope this couple gets a big bill from the sheriffs office.
Kudos to the rescue team. They performed well to help this couple. Obviously, the couple made a mistake in underestimating their danger and overestimating their skill level. This story should be shared with as many people as possible to highlight the danger of fooling around with Mother Nature. She always wins.
