Veteran EDC supervisorial assistant gone

Judi McCallum, longtime assistant to the District 5 supervisor in El Dorado County, abruptly left her job.

Judi McCallum

She worked for the county from March 26, 1991, to March 20, 2017.

McCallum’s resignation letter is not being made public. However, those inside the county said the separation was not McCallum’s idea.

McCallum and Supervisor Sue Novasel have had a touchy relationship. McCallum was used to working for Norma Santiago, who when she was supervisor, did not require McCallum to come into work every day and instead would allegedly work from home. Novasel put an end to that practice.

According to the Human Resources Department, “There are two types of recruitment that may be conducted. When an open recruitment is conducted, any eligible applicant can participate in the recruitment process. When a county promotional recruitment takes place, it is open to all current county employees and those who meet qualifications for the job participate in the process.”

Judi is a wonderful person, who did a remarkable and wonderful job not only watching the supervisors’ backs but also helping the supervisors help their constituents get problems resolved. I’ve known Judi since shortly after she was became the supervisor’s assistant and have interfaced with her on numerous occasions on numerous different issues over the years. She has always been very helpful and a pleasure to deal with. The county is losing one of the best of the best, and we will miss her greatly! Best wishes, Judi, in pursuing your passions!

I agree with the previous comment completely. I knew Judi when she was a Tahoe local who was a delight to be around and the most loyal of friends. Then 26 years ago she began a remarkable career working for each Supervisor that we County voters sent to her. She worked for John Upton, Dave Solaro, Norma Santiago and now Sue Novasel. I’ve always thought of her as being like Radar O’Reilly from Mash. He was the assistant who knew what his boss wanted or needed before they asked or even thought of it. I had occasion to be in that office through every Supervisor. I would watch her work on a letter on the computer, answer the phone and give precise accurate information to a constituent standing in the office while dealing with whatever issue I had brought in. It was perfect to have a Tahoe local work in Placerville who also seemed to know everyone down there also. Not once did she ever disparage any of her bosses. I think it is sad and wrong for anyone to assume anything about what may or may not have gone on behind closed doors regarding her retirement. This is not a memorial statement (she would tease me about that) but I have to say that Judi McCallum is one of the finest people I have known in my adult life. I hope God blesses her and her family as she hopefully has fun in retirement. She deserves it.

6 days short? That better not disqualify her for anything owed.
