Just before 7 Friday morning firefighters arrived at a house on Paloma Street in South Lake Tahoe that was fully engulfed in flames.

A woman living in the duplex was taken to Barton Memorial Hospital for smoke inhalation. Two dogs at the residence died in the fire.

The cause of the June 9 blaze is believed to have been smoking materials in bed.

Damage is estimated at $150,000; with the front unit severely damaged, and the back unit sustaining extensive damage as well.

Unfortunately, there are still so many SLT residents who don’t understand the perils of fire, and their risky behaviors (smoking in bed, unattended campfires, etc) put many other folks at risk. I have already reported my neighbor’s (also in a duplex) twice for uncontained & unattended fires! They are usually Renters who come to Tahoe with no understanding of our environment – I think all rental units should contain language in their lease agreement, and be posted that uncontained and unattended fires are against the law in South Lake Tahoe, and there should be a fat fine if an engine is called to respond.
