Champions Plaza sculpture to be unveiled
The unveiling of the Spirit of Competition bronze sculpture at Champions Plaza in South Lake Tahoe will take place Oct. 27 at noon.
On the heels of the 2014 Winter Olympics, in which several local athletes earned Olympic medals, the idea of creating a Champions Plaza was born. To honor and recognize these athletes the City Council approved the construction and design of a Champions Plaza at Lakeview Commons.
The approximate 11-foot bronze sculpture which represents male and female athletes reaching for a ring is being created by Gareth Curtiss.
In the spring the athletes will be inducted.
The artist’s first rendering did not include one female athlete! Thankfully, Olympic champion Jaime Anderson and others spoke up to get at least one female represented on this sculpture. This artist hopefully learned that his gender bias does not fly in Tahoe! I trust the female champions will be the first inductees!
I went to the unveiling today. Sadly the man is up front holding the ring and the women are behind reaching for it. Our city needs to represent the great achievements of these women but no as usual South Lake Tahoe is behind the times.
