Joseph Balius, best known in South Lake Tahoe for leaving Lake Tahoe Community College students who were residing at the Alder Inn in a lurch when he skipped town, has filed for bankruptcy.

Balius, whose first name is Shelly but goes by his middle name of Joseph, filed the paperwork with his wife, Kira, in Las Vegas. Court documents show a Henderson address for the couple. It is believed they moved to this town next to Vegas when they abruptly left Tahoe last fall.

There is a creditors’ meeting on July 30 in the U.S. Bankruptcy Court, District of Nevada, with South Lake Tahoe residents part of that group.

The Balius’ attorney did not return phone calls.

South Lake Tahoe police officials did not return a call inquiring if they still had an open case against Balius.

The issue with the students has long since been settled.

Good follow up LTN! You don’t get that kind of follow up with the Tribune! And I REALLY hope the SLTPD gets back to you!! They can’t be that busy?! Even with Summer here they still seem to be able to spare enough officers to cite people for the pettiest reasons and always have multiple, not just one, but multiple cars pulling people over!

To bad on a story like this the facts are not researched to give a true picture of what happen. With the market fall and the effort to sell the property they had no choice but to leave. The option was going to be called on the property. The same happen a year before but it was extended for one year….his mistake was owing a motel in that area and when the crash happen many lost out…he was just singled out because of the college student. They former owner could have made it easy but chose to slam this family because the failed to purchase as agreed. I know because I looked at the property in an effort to but or support them. The timing was just bad as it was for many others. Most of this come because he supported Ted Long for city council and would never take that step back in order to work with other. The former owner could have done her part as well. Good luck to all

Do not have all the facts but on thing for sure is that Mrs Stefani cause the problems with the students in her efforts to cause Mr.& Mrs Balius more heartache.

I was told of this article yesterday by a good friend. I was a guest of the Alder Inn for 13 days after the fire. Joseph did not charge me one red cent and I offered to pay several times. I lost my home car and 34 years memories with that fire but Joseph made me laugh. I saw what they did during that time and know a little more about this than others. I wish that family all the best & god bless.
