Bijou students walking to raise money

Bijou Community School is having a walk-a-thon to raise money for the South Lake Tahoe school. It started at 9:30 this morning and continues until 11:30.

It’s not too late to help the K-5 school raise money that will go to the “extras” for the students.

I’m sorry, I know y’all think I’m a Scrooge, but why don’t they do this stuff on a Saturday instead of during class time? That might show a bit more actual caring on everybody’s part instead of just having a nice time when they ought to be learning something.

I think the teachers would agree with you. They’d love it if there was enough money so they didn’t have to do fundraising but as you know, those days went out when I was in elementary school. Getting kids to a school as a unit on a Saturday would cost even more money that they don’t have. Teachers, supervising staff, bus transportation, ugh! Support the kids both in money and spirit.

That’s what I’m talking about. Volunteerism. We had walkathons when I was in school too. On Saturdays. No paid staff, no buses. People came and gave of themselves. The local sports kids have car washes on their own time. . .why not this?

I don’t recall having to do any fund-raising for the public schools I attended, and I’m in my 40’s, so it wasn’t all that long ago.

Fund-raising went on all through my kids school days, and I never liked it, coupon books, wrapping paper, etc. unless you want your kid to go into sales, this is only a negative to me.

Sorry about the rant, but this has been a bone of contention with me for a long time ;)
