South Tahoe pedestrian dies after being struck by vehicle
A South Lake Tahoe woman who was crossing Highway 50 Wednesday night died from her injuries Thursday morning at Renown Medical Center in Reno, where she had been airlifted.
The name of the 62-year-old is not being released pending notification of her family.

The accident occurred about 6pm Feb. 9 in front of Grocery Outlet. Officers said the woman was jaywalking across the highway when she was hit leaving the store.
Traffic headed toward Stateline was backed up for a while that night. Vehicles were diverted through the parking at Grocery Outlet while officers took measurements on the highway and collected evidence.
“He was not speeding. He just didn’t see her walk in front of him,” Sgt. Shannon Laney said of the driver.

People jaywalk there all the time, it was only a matter of time. Sad situation, I feel really bad for the driver.
Too sad! That is jaywalking central. We need a lighted crosswalk there asap.
Lots of nighttime jaywalking in front of the Brewery too. I stopped for jaywalkers about 9 months ago and got slammed into from behind. Walkers were fine but 2 cars suffered a lot of damage.

Wonder if some kind of flashing light, or what they did at the gondola needs to be done?
All this is very unnecessary. The accidental death, and the feeling from the public that it can prevent every accidental death. There is a crosswalk 1/4 of a mile away at Tahoe Keys Blvd. Had she used it, its likely she would still be with us.
There is un underground tunnel underneath HWY 50 between Harrah’s & Harvey’s, yet hundreds of people choose to play frogger across the highway every single day. People calculate the risk, and just go for it. Unfortunately there is not a 100% chance of survival.
We don’t need another signal on HWY 50! This person should have walked either east or west to the crosswalks already in place. She took a chance and now a lot of unnecessary suffering all around.
If pedestrians would make it a habit to wear brighter clothing and carry a flashlight after dusk, it would be safer for everyone involved. I walk almost everywhere in town, but I am also behind the wheel too. I’m constantly surprised how many people walk in or across the street in the evening wearing dark clothes. We all know how difficult it is to see while driving at night!
I have no idea how this poor soul was dressed, but it’s just common sense to wear a headlamp or find a way to be more visible to drivers.
How sad for both parties.
