Concord cuts programs to Lake Tahoe camp

Despite drastic city budget cuts, Camp Concord will be open for families this summer.
However, youth and teen programs at the rustic 29-acre Lake Tahoe camp will be suspended this year. Concord’s Day Camp and Back Yard Explorer programs will continue to be open.
Every department in the city has made significant cuts to its budget this year. Concord Mayor Laura Hoffmeister said that $18 million has been cut from the general fund since 2008-2009 and that city staff has been reduced by 24 percent.
“I hope somewhere down the road we can reinstate teen resident camping,” said Joan Carrico, Concord director of Community and Recreation Services. “(Teen camp) is very staff intensive. With no parents present it requires a higher level of supervision.”
