Carolyn and Dee moving back unload the UHaul party!!!

  2. Kim says - Posted: May 25, 2011

More food and wine things — outdoors. Not at a casino. And NOT on a holiday weekend. Bad move to put Sample the Sierra on Labor Day. That’s such a family weekend.

  3. fireman says - Posted: May 25, 2011

How about some Boat Races on the lake. Not the Queen and Dixie.
    Would be fun to watch.
Maybe a snowmobile racing event in the winter.
    Would be fun to watch.
Maybe a motorcycle race around the lake.
    Would be fun to watch.
Maybe an ofroad competitin at twin peaks

  4. heapstack says - Posted: May 25, 2011

A yearly outdoor music festival at California Lodge.

  5. Skibum says - Posted: May 25, 2011

Bring back them following: Rodeo at Amackers ranch, Hill climbs at the Sand Pits, Summer concerts at Kirkwood, Jazz on the beach at the Waystation (now the Tahoe Beach and Ski) and last but not least The Meatcutters!!

  6. Parker says - Posted: May 25, 2011

We need to have both a Summer and Winter kick-off party, (THAT DOESN’T INVOLVE BLOCKING OFF ANY ROADS!!). It could be at one or more of the Casinos and their blocking lot/s. Plenty of people came to the Two Summer Kick-Off Parties that were done. Just the whole blocking off Hwy. 50 was the part made it extremely unpopular.

Hopefully besides the people that showed up, the publicity would let the World know we’re open for business and the place to go for our money-making Seasons. And ideally the people that attended would be able to find out ALL the different and fun things there are to do here in SLT!!

  7. fireman says - Posted: May 25, 2011

hey ski bum sounds good to me lets get some stuff going on up here that make some noise right. Maybe even something to go to enjooy and drink a ice cold beer.
    Would be fun right

  8. Parker says - Posted: May 25, 2011

Don’t know why I said blocking lot/s? Of course I meant parking lots!!

  9. 30yrlocal says - Posted: May 25, 2011

Washoe Valley-Reno is this fall’s Edible Pedal…that would work here. Easy riding from foodie place to foodie place.

I think we should take the 2 historical events we have, Pony Express Ride and Hwy 50 Wagon train ride and make them into big celebrations. Create events around them that other towns don’t have (or since they are so close, make it something like a Wild West Week).

Mark Twain days as well…carnival, events throughout town.

  10. TahoeKaren says - Posted: May 26, 2011

How about drag races at the airport?

  11. Boone says - Posted: May 26, 2011

Events… how about a road repair event?
curb repair event! Installing walkway event! Bike trail construction event!

Then when the town looks good maybe more would come to some of the fun events noted prior by others…

  12. X LOCAL says - Posted: May 26, 2011

There are many good Ideas that have been suggested, hopefully some of them will be followed through on.
The one that I would like to see is the ability to access the beaches with out having to pay, like Pope Beach, Kiva Beach and there are many more areas of the lake that we are just not able to go to anymore without having to pay or trespass, it used to be that the public could go anywhere on the lake as long as you were 20 feet above the high water mark as that was all public right of way

  13. Bob says - Posted: May 26, 2011

How about Chemtrail Day? We can all point at the sky and deny the military is spraying us with barium, strontium and aluminum for god knows what reason. Oh, I’m sorry….that was just a regular plane up thar, hay?

  14. Froggy says - Posted: May 26, 2011

Create a signature mountain bike race. Don’t think these things bring money? Talk with the folks at Downeyville.

How about bringing back the 24 hour races?

  15. Ernie Claudio says - Posted: May 26, 2011

    Skateboarding Events.

  16. dumbfounded says - Posted: May 26, 2011

How about corrupt public official tar and feather day?

  17. dogwoman says - Posted: May 26, 2011

Hey Bob–How about “tin foil hat day?”

  18. Perry R. Obray says - Posted: May 26, 2011

Fireman and SkiBum, maybe some kind of event at Amacker ranch the night the wagon train stops over?

Sand pit hill climbs might be pretty cool.

Fireman, motorcycle race around the lake might have to be done the week prior to july 4th due to tire traction issues that might arise from cold asphalt. Maybe only having it in Nevada in the afternoon when hotter?

Froggy, TAMBA is trying to build an expert downhill mtnbike path. Hopefully I’m in on this build, YEAH!

Autocross car races, I’ve seen em at the Horizon casino parking lot before, nice. That was an English car club. Snow Summit resort at Big Bear had a vette autocross at least once. Way cool.

Trials riding event. Motorcycles, bicycles, unicycles, ect…Maybe as part of a bike fest or some bicycle/motorcycle event. Donner Summit(Donner ski ranch) already does this. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6ZEj548vAkY This is a compilation of 2 separate motorcycle events, the second half is from a Donner Summit trials national event.

Can we build a halfpipe at a local park and use it in Jan. and Feb. for winter, then in the summer for wheeled sports?

Dumbfounded, there is not enough tar and feathers for all of them, bummer.

    Boone, http://mountainbiketahoe.org/ for trail building.

Maybe a free parking tower at the Y and the city lot (where the senior citizen center, library, campgrounds are at) where access to free fixed route transit can be accessed. At one time only 10%-15% of the operating cost of Blue Go was covered by fares.

How did the splitboard fest go at Echo Summit last winter?

  19. Philip Blowney says - Posted: May 26, 2011

I am certain more outdoor music events would fly. Perhaps at the almost useless airport? Lots of parking and room to set up. Bring a big name in and charge for it. We had Elton John and so far nothing big for the concert series. Heavenly used to do music there but people cant afford the ride up.Oh yeah to those few residents that want peace and QUIET everyday, things are really quiet with less visitors and businesses surviving than ever !!
I still say expanding on Hot August Nights with use of the Harveys music venue for a great group like Beach Boys or a bunch of retro bands would add to the fun. Once again since Long Beach backed out we should kick it all off for the week prior to Reno. How sad the Amgen effort did not pay off. Weather will be great in August !
I know Valhalla is trying to do more events and music thanks to Laurie Cramer. Be sure to support anything out there.
There has been talk of a HUGE holiday festival out there for the week before Christmas. Takes time to plan and not much has been done to jump on the “holiday” theme for our scruffy little town.

  20. Aviation Supporter says - Posted: May 26, 2011

    Tahoe Karen,
The FAA won’t allow a drag race at an airport. Non-aviation use is not a typical use. Although, it seems that maybe a dog sitting business might work out there.

  21. Honkylonk says - Posted: May 26, 2011

How about reviving the “Starlight Jazz Festival” at the most scenic (and woefully under-used) amphitheater in the world. Oh wait… the “Forest Circus” won’t let the taxpayers use their own facility for any amplified music, it might disturb the squirrels. (The raccoons enjoy it, they’re up all night anyway.)

  22. Perry R. Obray says - Posted: May 26, 2011

Getting Trout creek and the Upper Truckee river into a better managed fishery (most likely some kind of catch and release formula). What kind of event can come from this?

  23. X LOCAL says - Posted: May 26, 2011

Good stuff people, I really like the TAR & FEATHER the Politicians, Start with the City Mgr. and then the whole Council.

  24. Ernie Claudio says - Posted: May 26, 2011

I talked with some people in the Tahoe Art League and we were thinking about art shows for kids. The kids love to their artwork on display. It gives them confidence and pride.

  25. Tahoe Freedom Fighter says - Posted: May 26, 2011

I want to see Ernie on a skateboard!

  26. DAVID DEWITT says - Posted: May 26, 2011

    A road repair contest.

  27. fireman says - Posted: May 28, 2011

World championship Snowmobile Hill climb Up the Face at Heavenly. Currently help in Jackson HOle Wyoming and Brings them upwards of 20 Million for that weekend. Huge event and the people that partake spend money like mad.

  28. T. Michael Lee says - Posted: May 28, 2011

Music like commons beach in Tahoe city at Bal Bijou. That is a city park, not condo property.
    Sand pit races.
    More mtn biking events.
Skateboarding and anything sports related. This is Tahoe.
    Good idea on fishery!
Amacker ranch stop over a good one.
By the way, good attempt on AMGEN race
Meatcutters would not work.. i know.

  29. dogwoman says - Posted: May 28, 2011

I like the racing and music ideas! boats, bicycles, dirt bikes, snowmachines, they’re all a HOOT and they all draw people! We drive long distances to watch races, it’d be nice to have more here. Great exposure to Lake Tahoe for the kind of people who actually SPEND MONEY. Race fans tend to be generous, unlike the environmentally conscious set, unfortunately. They’ll park on the side of the highway to avoid parking fees for their hikes!
Also, more outdoor music would be nice, like they do in Tahoe City. Our Harvey’s outdoor series is successful, but expensive for locals to attend. Maybe once the work gets done at our new “Commons Beach” we can have some events there?

  30. the conservation robot says - Posted: May 28, 2011

I love these responses. Some really great ideas that I would have brought up (more live music, and some extreme redneck sports). Why can’t we do a festival like Telluride? (that doesn’t involve loud vehicles)
And a dash of crazy. Chemtrails, torturing politicians, demanding access and services for free.
I have always thought about a large music festival that is combined with some sort of volunteer restoration or site improvement. Accomplish the goals of recreation, economy, and environmental stewardship all at once.

  31. 30yrlocal says - Posted: May 28, 2011

Now we just need someone to make these work :).

Expanding more on my idea from above: Wild West Week: Stagecoach circle, chuckwagon food, music…everyone on bails of hay, rent the field where the snow sleigh rides are during winter (and other places so we can spread through town), Mark Twain activities, involve the paddlewheels, Buffalo Bill’s wild west shows, all sorts of races, service clubs having tug of wars over mud pit, ski run closed for old time gun battle and so on. I think it’d be fun, but, thats just me…would attract all ages, locals and tourists, and something that could get past regulators easily.

  32. lou pierini says - Posted: May 28, 2011

Make everything thats legal in Nv. legal in Ca. and the whole basin would boom.

  33. geeper says - Posted: May 30, 2011

Lots of great ideas, but what would the TRPA allow?

  34. Bob Rockwell says - Posted: June 1, 2011

I would add to Skibums list, hydro plane races on the lake and Fun House fridays featuring somw good sixties bands like It’s a Beautiful Day, Stoneground, Aum, John Mayall….

  35. Skibum says - Posted: June 1, 2011

We had a drag boat, a Budweiser boat if I remember right, go down in the lake and they never found the driver back in the early 80’s. The bands are a good idea just nowhere to have them outdoors. Hey, maybe we could make a community park out of the hole.

  36. Bob Rockwell says - Posted: June 1, 2011

Hey Skibum,I remember that boat going down. Rumour was the driver got de capitated upon impact. The hole up at stateline could be turned into an amphitheater. Another venue for rock and roll could be the old Millers Outpost building at the Y. The accoustics would be terrible, probably as bad as the sound in the original Fun House, (where Freshies is now.) The Hi-Lo’s 4wd club could bring back the hill climb at the sand pits.Harrah’s used to sponser the hydroplane races in the early 60’s, maybe again(?)

  37. Catlapper says - Posted: June 1, 2011

Bob! Right there with you on the chemtrail issue. Some people just don’t want to know.Glad to hear there’s someone out there that is aware of the difference between chemtrails and contrails.Chemtrails stick and linger, contrails dissipate.

  38. the conservation robot says - Posted: June 1, 2011

Catlapper you are misinformed. They are both contrails. The atmospheric conditions are different. Cold stable air will not let the vapor dissipate.
Please stop spreading misinformation. Chemtrails do not exist.

  39. Philip Blowney says - Posted: June 2, 2011

One more time; I grew up in the mid- west and attended many air shows as my dad was a pilot and our show is a good start but not very exciting with a couple bi planes doing some tricks. There should be more effort to include some of the war planes of the past and some Fallon F16s doing their thing. We have the Reno air races and should capture some of what they provide to make it more fun for all. The airport works for celebrity golf and not too much else.
Dont forget a holiday light and decoration contest for businesses up and down 50 and particularly ski run! We could almost leave them on all year with snow on June 2nd !

  40. Skibum says - Posted: June 2, 2011

Millers / Mikasa could be a great venue similar to the Catylyst in Santa Cruz but there is a “second hand” / “thrift store” store going in there sometime in the near future.

  41. 40 year local says - Posted: June 5, 2011

Growing up here I remember Gambler’s Rodeo at the sand pits was a good time. The Wagon Train was a huge celebration with parties at every stop in town(especially Amacker’s), There used to be a Winter Carnival with a street parade and torchlight procession down Gunbarrel, Christmas house lighting contest, and a fodd and wine event at Valhalla with local retaurants.

Turning the Millers/mikasa into a nice entertainment venue is a cool idea. We need to look back to when the Tahoe slogan was “americas All Year Playground” and not Come up and stay if you meet certain income level and demographic criteria.

Nice job landing Amgen as an event up here.

  42. TahoeSkiButler says - Posted: June 7, 2011

Outdoor concerts that are in California.
    DOwnhill Mtn Biking at Heavenly.
    Major Ski/Snowboard Events at Heavenly.
    South Lake Tahoe Jazz Festival?
I like the boat race idea.

How about a night for the singles only party for the locals only that live in Lake Tahoe ? So many new singles have moved in and would love to meet other singles also, Any parking lot would do for a night with a live bad, and you do have to be over 21,
