K-9 units find drugs at STHS, 2 students suspended
Two South Tahoe High School students have been suspended and face criminal charges after School Resources Officer Aaron Crawford said marijuana and paraphernalia were found in their vehicles on campus.
K-9 units from the South Lake Tahoe Police Department were brought to STHS and South Tahoe Middle School on Sept. 26 to sniff around lockers and vehicles.
The school board in March approved the random periodic narcotic searches by the dogs.
Crawford, in a press release, said, the more students see police K-9s on campus, the less likely they are to bring drugs and drug paraphernalia to school.
The students, whose names are not being released based on their age, were cited for possession of marijuana on school property, lost their driving privileges on campus, were suspended and await a decision from the El Dorado County District Attorney’s Office if charges will be pressed.

Release their names. If they’re old enough to drive, carry illegal substances and possibly under the influence while driving, they’re old enough to face the consequences, including having their names published.
I can’t believe high school kids would be smoking pot, this is an outrage!
Way to go SLTPD: Justice is a dish best served in a learning enviroment for our children.
Really?
Yeah….
we all know the consequences of smoking marijuana.
irrational, unjustified, punishment from self righteous crusaders.
Mr. Sands, you show a high level of ignorance with your comments. Please expand your defense of these 2 students.
It is one thing to smoke a joint at a party. It is completely another to bring your stash to school to either smoke it up, or distribute to your boys. There is no place for drugs in a school. Some people actually go there to learn something. The street smart kids will learn party time is Friday night, not Monday afternoon.
And one more thing Mr. Sands, do you also sarcastically mock SLTPD when they patrol school zones ensure everyone is properly slowing down? If you do, then you are even more ignorant than I originally thought. If you don’t, then I expect some type of retraction of your earlier comments. SLTPD has a tough enough job trying to protect our children. Sometimes this job includes issuing tickets to irresponsible drivers. Sometimes this job includes prosecuting the kids dealing drugs in school. This is a care test. Let’s see if you pass.
It is also ignorant to assume that they do drugs in school and are dealers….
I think we should all write an essay about what it means to be a libertarian as suggested in the Lifestyle section by our friends at the “Bill of Rights Institute”.
leave those kids alone, you bricks in the wall..
how can you have any pudding?
What ever happened to the High school Maintenance man “Larry Brown”, who was caught smoking pot with the high school girl in a car at the High School parking lot ? I think he was 60 years old and caught with a 16 year old. Was he ever punished ?
If high school kids bring alcohol on campus what do you think would happen?
Regardless of anyone’s opinion about whether or not marijuana should be legal, there is a time and place for everything, and school is not the place for recreational drugs. Especially in quantity. Society requires adulthood for drinking (supposedly) so I would assume the attitude would apply to marijuana. Whatever you or I think about the law, it is what it is, and the school kids know full well that campus is no tolerance.
There is a search button right above all those square ads. Putting Larry Brown as the two-word search would get you this story: https://www.laketahoenews.net/2011/05/ex-sths-security-guard-admits-guilt/.

I fully support the right of an adult to put the substance of your choice into your body, I am not ignorant of the hype surrounding the dangers of Marijuana but I do not support drug or alcohol use in minors. It’s time to set a precedence of what will not be tolerated on school campuses. Whether or not you believe that marijuana should be legal is irrelevant. It is not legal and therefore a crime was committed and warrents legal action
Why should the police raise your children? The parent is the one that is responsible to teach their children to “just say no” and set the example.
@ Krista: Apparently somebody’s parents aren’t doing their job, so the police need to step in and enforce the law.
Bummer, Dude.
Right “dog” but some parents try to “train” their kids into obediance by having law enforcement put them in jail to “teach them a lesson” or “scare them straight”. It’s not funny and it costs you money for the police, sheriff, chp, to have to spend time on issues like this when they have real work to do. Honestly. Teach your children to be productive members of society and they won’t have to be disciplined and have a marker on their record for life.
I absolutely agree, Krista.
