Most schools in Lake Tahoe closed because of snow
If you see more young people than usual out and about today in the Lake Tahoe Basin, they are not skipping school. Many schools are closed because of the heavy, wet snow that has fallen and is creating hazardous driving conditions.
Lake Tahoe Unified is closed; Lake Tahoe Community College will have classes starting after noon, however, the Child Development Center is open; Douglas County schools already had the day off; Tahoe Truckee Unified is closed; Incline Schools are closed, however, all other Washoe County schools are on a two-hour delay; Sierra Nevada College is closed; and Truckee Meadows Community College in Reno is on a two-hour delay.
A winter storm warning remains in effect until 4 this afternoon. The heaviest snow is expected to last until 10 Monday morning. However, in South Lake Tahoe at 6:30am the white stuff had become a slight rain. About 4 inches of snow accumulated overnight in South Tahoe.
The sun is expected to return Tuesday, with a high of 55 forecast for Thursday on the South Shore.
Ski resorts are able to open more terrain with this gift from Mother Nature. Despite a weekend worth of snow, tree skiing is still not advised until another layer covers all those rocks.
The Sierra Avalanche Center says the danger in the backcountry is at high.
Roads are slick and mucky, with chain requirements on most highways in and out of the Tahoe basin. For all the road conditions, click on the state icons at the top of Lake Tahoe News’ home page.

With this much snow?
4inches of Snow and they call a SNOW DAY??
Never heard of anything like it, How Stupid can it be? Somebody has there head up their #*@#, what the heck are you going to do when it really Snows ????
Sounds like Something O’Rourke would do, Is he running the schools too???
x..a lot more than 4″ of heavy snow at my house. The school district official drives the roads needed to get to and from school around 4 am and has to make a decision based on what’s happening and what’s forecasted. They are only thinking safety for all involved, from the parents getting kids to school, kids walking and the buses navigating the routes.
I thought the same thing… until I went out to clean the driveway. Heavy and wet. The plow had a tough time making it up the street.
The new plow drivers do not know how to put down the blade when they come to a driveway. Aren’t the employees new this year? The city let go of the employees who knew what they were doing. Thank you.
The drivers didn’t do it last year either unless I was standing on my driveway. Then they dropped the blade when they saw me.
The Plow driver over in the Heavenly Village area did a horrible job,I agree with Scott, the experience and know how went out the window with the new guy over here.
I watched people struggle to remove the snow the first time, only to be filled back up with compressed nuggets, snow boulders, there’s more few like to have his address and phone number.
This hasn’t happened in over 10 years in our area. Like the guy doesn’t give a damn.
I did leave a message about this problem with the City. I don’t know what can be done. A lot of us pay property tax and part of that is paying for good services. Thanks to all that responded regarding the snow plows. If I am not mistaken, if the kids don’t go to school because of snow, those days are made up during the school year. Have a great day. We need more snow.
They never put the blade down for our driveway, I think they don’t want to be bothered, and it must not be in their job description.
The street superintendent is new also, from Carson City. The new operators are doing their best I’m sure. But their’s no substitution for experence.
How many plows do you see in Carson city?
