Raise the sales tax to 15% along with the income tax. Get rid of Prop. 13 and raise property taxes to 3%. The Brown will have plenty of money to do all his good works such as hiring more state workers, increasing teachers pay, adding to the meager welfare checks. It just goes on and on all the good things the government could do to get votes from the receivers of all this largesse.

It isn’t about raising taxes. It’s about only providing services which the government is required to do. Start by assuming the State doesn’t exist and you are giving none of your money to this entity. Then decide why the State was formed and establish funding through taxes, etc. for those reasons only. Anything else should be handled by private companies which you can decide whether to buy their services or not.

I would leave California and let it collapse under the excessive and ‘self anointed’ privileged government class as it deserves too do.
Then I’ll come back and fix it when it is fixable.

So, why are some of you begrudging those that benefit from Prop 13? It was legitimately voted on by the people, for the people. Can’t take that away from them. But, maybe we should be considering making those not working, because they’d rather take from the government (and that’s where our tax dollars are going!), take a job….any job, to prove they really are willing to work. I don’t mean those that have been working and now aren’t through no fault of their own. I mean those who came here professing to want to work, but aren’t willing to take just any job. Hmmmmm…..

I have lived here for 35 years, have spent the majority of it working two jobs, I raised my family, I’ve never owned a new car, purchased my home in 1987 for $85,000, and have no debt. But like millions of americans I will live off SS in my retirement years, and cannot afford tax increases on my property. They come anyway in the form of bond measures, but the clincher would be a state assessor telling me my home is worth 400,000 now and my taxes should be raised.
Of what value is a home I cannot afford to live in till I die I ask you? I made a life here, taxes should never be the reason why that life would have to end here.
Your attitude is so typical of the those that think gov’t is the end all be all of our existence. Me? I chose freedom from tyranny and the likes of you.

Prop 13 should be revised to apply only to residential property. Currently, it applies to all property, including commercial.
Just think – the owner of the Crescent V property still pays property taxes based on pre-Prop 13 rates. But you must know that he is collecting business rents based on 2012 rental rates.
The underlying basis for Prop 13 was to allow those on a fixed income to remain in their homes and not be taxed out of them – it was not meant to become a cash cow for wealthy commercial land owners.

Dan, I’ve lived here longer than you have, bought a home in the 70’s and paid it off years ago. My wife and I also worked non-stop for almost 40 yrs. and raised successful, happy children and we are also debt free. My point is in response to all the “blame the gov’t for everything” folks who claim to want to replace Government programs such as Soc. Security and Medicare with taking “personal responsibility” for their retirement and medical expenses. So, all of you cons feel free to choose the freedom Not to accept the “tyranny” of these Gov’t programs and fend for yourselves with all the money you saved by refusing to pay taxes. I chose to live in the “We the People” reality of America not the “Me the People” country of the likes of you.

Passion, how do you figure that the “owner” of Crescent V is still paying pre-prop 13 taxes? That property was STOLEN from the old rancher by the city about 10 years ago in the name of redevelopment and given to an LLC.
Even if Van Sickle DID still own it, commercial property is taxed differently from residential property, even under prop 13.

Dogwoman, you are correct about Crescent V – I used a poor example. However, I stand by the premise that Prop. 13 should be revisited as it relates to commercial property. There are other properties throughout the state that are being taxed well under what is appropriate.
Here is a very interesting article on the subject.
1) Start using the correct property tax figures. If the foreclosures stoped today it wouild be 2-3 years before the drop in the assessed values catches up with market values. Tax receipts will drop for at least another three years.
2) Change the public retirement multiplyer back to two instead of three. The same goes for people who retired from 1999 to date.
