Holiday cheer through lights

The South Shore is a little brighter this holiday season, thanks to Leadership Lake Tahoe and the enthusiasm of the local business community. More than 40 local businesses are participating in the inaugural Light Up Lake Tahoe.

After receiving donations from local organizations, strands of white LED lights were distributed to participating businesses. Now, the businesses have installed their lights, and are asked to keep them on throughout the holiday/winter season. Lights will be collected in March, to be stored and used toward next year’s program.

Proceeds from Light Up Lake Tahoe benefit Tahoe Turning Point, a private, nonprofit agency that provides group care and residential treatment for young men ages 12 to 18.

Additional lights are currently unavailable for this season, but all South Shore businesses with lighting displays are eligible to compete for the title of Best Lights on the Lake. Email lightuplaketahoe@gmail.com to have your business included in the program.

Lighting displays will be judged the week of Jan. 4 and the winner announced mid-January.

Hi; What a exciting site to finally see a dramatic effort to create the beautiful lighted tree at the outlet stores property at the Y ! Thanks to Tony O’Rourke , the guys at station three and effort from stpud and others we now have the begining of something quite important for our town!
My name is Phil Blowney and my business is Sessions Salon. We have erected a tree outside our upstairs salon for 25 years now and I know of no better way to spread the word that we are a beautiful winter destination than by lighting up highway 50 businesses.
There is more interest than ever from the small businesses and LESS than ever from Harrahs and Harveys to partake in this tradition. The LED light program from lightuplaketahoe.com has done quite a bit to help and now my personal goal is to dress our ” community tree ” with a new dramatic look and string white LED icicle lights from each branch and make it so beautiful we keep it lit thru the winter months!
Our LTVA helps sponsor the lighting event at the visitors center and with a bit more help this can easily be done. In the past there have been electrical power issues but with LED there is 75% less draw on the system.
Anyone interested in helping email me please @ sessionssalontahoe@yahoo.com or call me personally 530-318-2912.
Ask the businesses you support to take part in this effort to beautify Tahoe and thank those that care enough to help create our winter wonderland on the south shore. Thank you. Phil Blowney
