A study says the number of people killed in Nevada by guns outpaced those who died in traffic accidents in 2009.

The study released Tuesday by the Washington, D.C.-based Violence Policy Center says Nevada is one of 10 states where guns deaths were greater than traffic deaths. The other states are Alaska, Arizona, Colorado, Indiana, Michigan, Oregon, Utah, Virginia and Washington.

In Nevada, 406 gun deaths were reported in 2009, compared with 255 people who died in motor vehicle accidents.

Nationally, there were 31,236 firearm deaths and 36,361 motor vehicle deaths in 2009.

The report cites data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

A Violence Policy Center state-by-state analysis of government data comparing firearm deaths and motor vehicle deaths shows that gun deaths outpaced motor vehicle deaths in 10 states in 2009, the most recent year for which state level data is available. The 10 states which experienced more firearm deaths than motor vehicle deaths in 2009 are: Alaska, Arizona, Colorado, Indiana, Michigan, Nevada, Oregon, Utah, Virginia, and Washington (see alphabetical listing of states with mortality figures below). Nationally, there were 31,236 firearm deaths in 2009 and 36,361 motor vehicle deaths according to data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s National Center for Injury Prevention and Control.

How many times have I heard the faithful that pray to the NRA and the second amendment try to use the argument that cars kill more people than guns? My reply to that statement is: The definition of a car is a mode of transportation, and the definition of a gun IS A WEAPON!. Now, at least in the state of Nevada, they can’t even use that argument.

Biggerpicture – can you give one example of anyone that prays to the NRA and the second Amendment? Just one so you can have some credibility…. hmmm?

com’on spit it out…. I heard that,… is that Ms. ahh or Mr. ahh?

That statistic is a deceitful, it includes suicides – it is presented in a dishonest light.

Consider the reality, first off, guns don’t commit suicide, people do.

Second off, Cars as anyone knows are an inconvenient and messy way to commit suicide. Newer models are down right unreliable with the air bags and all. Very few people chose cars over the more popular methods.

On a related subject and to keep in line with my general principals – the rates of suicide in Europe and in the USA are going up as a result of the dire situations that people find themselves in due to the financial collapse caused by liberal banking mandates forced on the bankers and promulgated by Freddie and Fannie.

Pub, I’m surprised that I would have to explain to you that I’m metaphorically speaking when referring to overzealous proponents for gun ownership and the rights of gun owners. And having read many of your posts I find it amusing that you don’t seem to hold yourself to your own standards for others when it comes to credibility. I even find it more bizarre that you feel the need separate out suicides committed with guns from the statistic of deaths caused by guns. That to me would be the equivalent of saying children born to women through artificial insemination in America are not truly part of the statistic of the total number of children born in America.

P.S. Why the overt fascination with my gender? Does it matter? Do you need to know what it is to fit me into one of your categorical boxes?

Wow, isn’t this comparing apples and oranges? Gun deaths…murder, accidental, suicide, stupidity? Oh, and hunting accidents. I note that many of the top “gun death” states are pro-hunting/game harvesting states…and have more “rural” area.

Not sure what the point of this article, or previous banter means to prove.

Comparing gun deaths with traffic deaths? ?

I congratulate all Nevadans for being such careful drivers.

  6. tahoeadvocate says - Posted: May 25, 2012

I feel much better about driving in the 10 States identified and I will be sure to keep my gun in my car.

THERE ARE MORE GUNS THAN CARS IN Nevada what would you expect.

Biggerpicture, I wasn’t referring to your gender that was a nuance of who the prayer was and it was just part of a punch line… As with much of my humor I would hold up a laugh card at the appropriate points but the limitations here are obvious…

Now tahoeadvocate on the other hand, much better delivery than I.

All should realized that life is not always based on the answers we receive, but also on the questions that we ask.

Come on, get real, Guns verse Cars?

AUTOS ARE THE BIGGEST DESTROYER OF LIFE ON THE PLANET,THAT’S PLAN EASY TO SEE.

GUNS ON THE OTHER HAND GIVE WEAK PEOPLE A REASON NOT TO FEAR,makes powerful people “Paranoid’.

Using the wack jobs at the VPC for honest info is like asking Pravda do you prefer Communism or capitalism.
If you don’t like the second amendment change it. Our founding fathers were such idiots anyway.

    Interesting article & stats.
Gun deaths outnumber car deaths, when “90 percent of American households own a car while fewer than a third own firearms.” And, Nevada has 15.36 gun deaths per 100,000 capita compared to only an averaged 10.19 for 50 states combined. Higher per capita than any other state. Nevada stand out.

Nevada does not require a background check when individuals sell a gun. Nevada also has high unemployment, etc.

I’m not saying we shouldn’t have them, but it doesn’t make sense that guns of all things is the only product not subject to federal health and safety. I’m not saying we shouldn’t have them.

  12. John says - Posted: May 26, 2012

Jenny, guns are the most regulated consumer goods on the market today. What do you mean they are not subject to federal health and safety? I havent had a chance to look at the study yet, so I have to accept that the authors did not mess with the stats, but lets assume they did not. The study then proves that both guns and cars are potentially lethal. Shocking!

  13. jenny says - Posted: May 26, 2012

    John,
I’m quoting from the article. The article’s point is that everything except guns is regulated by federal health and safety. Car deaths are decreasing because of those safety standards. If guns are so regulated, why can an individual sell a gun privately without a background check, without a record of sell? Isn’t that disturbing to you?

  14. John says - Posted: May 26, 2012

Jenny, I dont have to check a persons driving record to sell them a car either. In fact no check is done on the sale of a car to anybody. And the article clearly shows cars are more deadly. Now if we want to get down to protecting people, lets have background checks for the sale of alcohol. Look I have a house full of guns, its true. I will also tell you that my guns are worthless for home defense because a properly stored gun cannot be available should someone break into my home. There are three locks between my kids,my guns and ammo. I do support background checks, but for a bunch of people guns are the great public safety issue of our time and that is also just not true.

the bigger the gun, the smaller the….

  16. John says - Posted: May 26, 2012

    mojo, grow up.

  17. Lisa says - Posted: May 29, 2012

Sorry John… you may not have to check someone’s back ground to sell them a car, but they have to fulfill many hours of training and pass both written and in person test to be able to use it. They are also retested at regular intervals. If we did the same with guns, I am sure the numbers would change.

As for suicides skewing the numbers, the fact there is a gun in the house at all increases the odds that suicide will occur and the gun will be the preferred method. In addition, I don’t believe I read many articles detailing how a kid or a friend hung someone by accident.
