S. Tahoe council to discuss how to fill vacancy

How will the vacant seat on the South Lake Tahoe City Council be filled?

That is the sole item on the agenda for a special meeting of the four remaining members. The meeting is Dec. 27 at 9am at Lake Tahoe Airport.

Claire Fortier abruptly, though not unexpectedly, resigned last week. The council options for how to replace her are dictated by state and local laws.

It is possible the council will decide next week how to move forward. But it’s also possible another special meeting could be called before the regular Jan. 8 meeting.

Technically we all knew before the election that Claire was down the road, and if she had resigned before the election we would have voted to fill three seats. Which in turn would have given Austin Sass a victory for that third available seat by virtue of receiving the third most votes. Yet there are some folks in our community that feel those votes don’t count as to being a testimony by the voters for appointing the the third place finisher. And I bet many of those folks are quite critical over the City’s handling of it’s purse strings, yet advocate the City spend the money for a special election for a seat that has only a two year term. Go figure!!!

Bigger Picture, well said. However, watch, the council will vote for an election because they don’t have the intelligence to not spend our money or the willingness to look past their own personal agendas and biases and appoint as you described. Its our job to remember this when Davis and Swanson come up for re-election in 2014.
