Then and now: ‘Color TV’ used to be something to advertise

oldnewFleming Music Company was here in the 1960s selling everything from grand pianos to 45-rpm records, and boasting “Color TV!”

Following numerous other occupants, this is now Auntie Q’s in South Lake Tahoe on Highway 50.

The 1969 photo was supplied by Bob Rockwell, while the current photo is mine.

    Bill Kingman,
Color tv at Fleming music was where I first saw the tv show “Bonanza” in color. It was a big deal because the opening shot of the show was with the Cartrights riding their horses up to the camera on Bourne’s meadow (which is just past round hill heading east), with Lake Tahoe in the background.
Years later my folks rented the spot where the music store was as Fleming had moved to Town & Country center. My folks opened “The Party House”, a Hallmark card and gift store in the old empty
music store. They later sold to the Northrup family and the Northrups moved it to the center where Rite -Aid and Radio Shack are now.
Take care, Old Long in the tooth

    Hey Bill:

At that time, the only TV reception we had in South Shore was KOLO Channel 8 (which of course is still to this day in Reno). . .

I’m still looking for a complete picture of the ‘pylon’ sign @ Harrah’s heralding both the South Shore Room at its’ top, and the incredible Lounge acts below. . .as it was the crux of the entrance to Harrah’s at the time (being in CA), and the reason for Harrah’s becoming prominent. . .

I want to write a story on that aspect, now lost.

    Thanks,

The good old days in Tahoe, do you remember when you had to get off the chair to switch the TV.

In the mid sixties there was a local tv station here. It mostly just showed a a bunch of dials mounted on a wall that were broadcast from a pivoting camera. Time, temperature, the all important barometric pressure, wind speed and a few others. No sound, just black and white tv focused on the dials.
My childhood buddy Ralph Fuchslin and I would call one another as the barometric pressure dropped, ” I think tommorow is going to be a snow day, somethings coming in! Lets go skiin’ tommorow morning!!!”.
Later in the day there was a DJ who played records on the local tv with no commentary, just the music. He had thick glasses and a madras shirt, watching him put an album away and pick out another to put on the turntable. Pretty exciting eh? Life was good!!!
Take care, Old Long Skiis, longing for the days of yesteryear.
