Report: High school students not ready for college
By Anita Hofschneider, Wall Street Journal
First, the bad news: Nearly 75 percent of 2013 high school graduates who took the ACT college readiness exam aren’t fully prepared for college, according to a report by the organization that administers the test.
Now, the (moderately) good: Student performance has improved slightly since 2009, when just 23 percent of high school graduates tested met all four of the exam’s benchmarks for college readiness, compared with 26 percent this year.
The report, out Wednesday from the ACT, shows that American high school students are making slow progress toward college readiness and raises concerns about whether they’ll have the skills necessary to fill jobs in the future, said Jon Erickson, president of educational division of the ACT.
More than half of all 2013 high school graduates in the U.S. took the exam, which assesses proficiency in English, reading, math and science.
Yet now there is a Federal agenda to make college more affordable for everyone, when so many who go shouldn’t until they are ready. Make it more affordable for those who have shown their readiness through SATs, ACT, etc.
Focus efforts on the first 12 grades and keeping students motivated so they will learn the basics.
What is your point?
Colleges are selective. The unprepared can’t get in.
We do need to do something about High Schools. Most people read on an 8th grade level. And you can’t really think beyond your reading level. Exhibit A: the popularity of Fox News.
Vouchers give kids a chance to escape the failed American Socialist indoctrination system.
It gives parents the opportunity to chose how their children are educated vs. indoctrinated …
Progressives in government consider parents having that freedom appalling … I find the progressives to be appalling. They are stealing your future and the future of your children and grand children.
Wake up and smell the rot. The rot of your government, the rot of your nation.
“No BijoiBill, I am the real McCoy and I talk about issues and facts, you liberals just attack people that don’t agree with you.”
Well CJ, you make this statement on one thread, then the below statement on another:
“I find the progressives to be appalling.”
Double standard, or is it okay for you because you view YOUR attacks on others merely as fact?
Fascists.
^ clueless.
Seems the Social Darwinists have crawled out from under their rock to feed on the blood of the poor again.
Vouchers would have set the state in a better direction had they past back in the 90’s when we voted on them. The people that supported vouchers were right in their arguments against the status quo. Back then we would have set the stage for a much better situation than we have now.
In your schools you have created a socialist indoctrination system led by political plutocrats that has polluted the minds of generations. Greece failed 2400 yrs ago under similar circumstances.
CJ-your statement about Greece does not jibe with historical fact, given the political stresses of the time. Just because Faux News says something is so does not make it true. It appears to me that the major influence in schools since the 90’s has been corporate America influencing the government’s education policy. A ‘corporate state’ aligned with charismatic leadership in government and the stifling of free thought is one of the precursors to the rise of Fascism. You are entitled to your opinions…you could maybe try reading a little history from unbiased sources.
‘There is a cult of ignorance in the United States, and there has always been. The strain of anti-intellectualism has been a constant thread winding its way through our political and cultural life, nurtured by the false notion that democracy means that “My ignorance is just as good as your knowledge.”- Isaac Asimov
It is amazing to me that people actually think conservatives are in favor of big corporate America, that is fool hardy. Big corporations and big banks are run by progressives not conservatives. Buffet, Soros, Jobs(RIP), Gates, Winn … they are not conservatives folks.
In fact the heads of Google and Facebook are helping the government spy on you. That is the essences of a progressive is it not?
They’re in league with Obama that is why big banks and big corporations have benefited soooo much under Obama, more than any other time in our history by some measures. It is at the heart of what is driving the wage disparity growth now at a rate that is the largest in history.
Are you one of the people that reads what others what them to think instead of paying attention to what is going on?
Obama is responsible for the fasted wage disparity growth in our nations history.
Look it up. And keep checking back because the gap is growing fast.
Check it out for yourselves don’t listen to the hate agitators that are on this site, check it for your selves.
