Then and now: Cecil’s Market a cornerstone of Tahoe

The landmark Cecil’s Market on Highway 50 near Stateline existed from the 1930s to 2001.
Today the market is located in the succeeding Heavenly Village complex.
The dirt driveway adjacent to the right of the original Cecil’s led to Jack Van Sickle’s Stateline Stables, also serving as the entrance to the original Tahoe Drive-In Theater until 1956.
The driveway later became Park Avenue. That section of which now is named Heavenly Village Way at the stoplight where Cecil’s stood for so long (2002 photo by me).

I miss the old Cecil’s. I can remember when Nevada had less taxes on alcohol than Cali. People would stop at Cecil’s and buy hundreds of dollars worth of alcohol and not have a clue they were still in Cali.
I miss the original Cecil’s Market. It was a fun place to poke around in and had lots of character. I do confess, I had almost forgotten how that intersection USED to look!
The deli sandwiches were really good…
Not to mention the gag gifts they had,(maybe still do?)
Cecil’s Market was a popular mainstay for many years on South Shore. We’d go there for the deli sandwiches when our friend Mark Bonfield was working the deli counter in the back. Good memories.Thanks Bill!
