Bear activity increasing; fruit trees an issue

Bear activity has taken a sharp increase in recent days as hungry black bears expand their search for food, according to the Nevada Department of Wildlife.

Areas near Yerington in Lyon County, the Topaz Ranch Estates and the Minden-Gardnerville area of Douglas County and the foothills of Reno have all seen bears Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday.

“We have four traps and they are all out and set,” said warden Lt. Mike McCusker of NDoW. “The goal is to trap these bears, perform aversive conditioning and release the bears, unharmed but chastened, back into the wild.”

The bears are targeting garbage, but ripened fruit from area trees is also a strong attractant this time of the year. Fruit on the ground should be picked up as soon as possible.

I have an apple tree next door, Lots of deer. I have not seen a bear.

I also read about a bear being hit by a car in Verdi. I asked the Fish and Game guy last weekend about it. He had heard nothing about it. No one has heard about it. Verdi is a very small place.

Let the Bear have the apples before they rot on the ground.

John I cannot speak to all Fruit Tree’s in Washoe county, but around here in Verdi these Apple tree’s were planted back when the land was occupied by a Family Farm or Ranch. This area has been lightly populated since the later 19th century. The Brown Bear is gone but black Bears have been eating the Grapes and Apples for several Generations. There are just more houses now. They come down in September and load up on fruit, along with the deer, raccoon skunk. ect.

Its ok. To me this article is just a reminder for this time of year. Hey if you go outside in the dark pay attention you might scare a big visitor!

I have not seen a bear here in two years. and that guy was on my porch looking in the sliding glass window.

It sounds like the wardens are trapping the bears, then taking them out to be hunted.
