Panel: It’s definite humans are changing climate

image_pdfimage_print

By Mark Memmott, NPR

Declaring that “human influence on the climate system is clear,” a U.N.-assembled panel of scientists reported Friday that “it is extremely likely that human influence has been the dominant cause of the observed warming since the mid-20th century.”

The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, which brings together hundreds of researchers from around the world, adds that “warming in the climate system is unequivocal and since 1950 many changes have been observed throughout the climate system that are unprecedented over decades to millennia.”

Looking ahead, panel co-chair Thomas Stocker warns that “continued emissions of greenhouse gases will cause further warming and changes in all components of the climate system. … Heat waves are very likely to occur more frequently and last longer. As the Earth warms, we expect to see currently wet regions receiving more rainfall, and dry regions receiving less, although there will be exceptions.”

Let’s just say for purposes of discussion that these folks are correct.

This is what I despise about liberals. They wring their hands over a problem that they identify, but never propose any viable solution. Then, by some miracle, they decide that more government is the solution.

If these hypocrites would live by example, cease travel altogether, stop using electricity, their argument would have more merit.

  2. Biggerpicture says - Posted: September 27, 2013

A.B., as opposed to the conservatives who deny anything is happening and then wring their hands and do absolutely nothing?

If those (you) hypocrites would live by example of doing ANYTHING their (your) argument might have merit.

  3. Parker says - Posted: September 27, 2013

A.B., Exactly!! Love to hear what the specific plan is to solve this ‘Global’ problem! Not what’s the plan to personally attack and name call those that disagree. But what’s the plan to get all the planet’s countries behind a solution?!

  4. cosa pescado says - Posted: September 27, 2013

There are plenty of plans out there. Mostly in planning for the future.
You are accusing people of not having solutions when they do. Because you aren’t looking and can’t admit that these people are smart, and right.

  5. Parker says - Posted: September 27, 2013

There are no plans out there, period!, that will guarantee in an enforceable way, that China and/or Russia, et al, will go along with anything proposed!

  6. Biggerpicture says - Posted: September 27, 2013

So Parker, you would advocate the old “Can’t beat ’em, so let’s join ’em” attitude?

Whether it’s our health, our environment, or our zealous compunction with over-consuming, 99% of Americans won’t make any changes unless they have a large cattle prod inserted deeply within their collective………well, use your imagination.

  7. Rick says - Posted: September 27, 2013

  9. Ralph Cramden says - Posted: September 28, 2013

One might think that in view of the fact that there has been no appreciable “global warming” in fifteen years all the alarmists would at least be mildly elated and claim victory, taking credit for their policies having made the difference and, for at least for the time being, keeping global warming at bay. But they realize that although the line on the graph for temperature remains flat, the line for CO2 emissions continues to climb… and that completely destroys their “anthropogenic global warming” hypothesis, and THAT is bad for business! So they continue to flog the ghost of the dead horse of “global warming” (now AKA “climate change”) in hopes that their incomes (AKA “grant money”) will not dry up and force them all to get a real job. In an effort to explain this obvious discrepancy, many alarmists are now pointing at the SUN as the the primary factor in the decline of warming, Decreased solar activity might actually have something to do with with less heat here on earth? Go figgur!!! Now they just need to find some grant money to conduct research on how mankind can control the sun; but given the inherent difficulties in that idea, and in view of they fact that there are no taxpayers on the sun to fleece, this effort may be moved to the back burner, so to speak.

  11. Marlene of Tahoe says - Posted: September 28, 2013

Ralph~~ You are so spot on with your analysis! The schamsters, scamsters AKA UNIPPC have had the logs burn out of their fire by true scientists with actual facts of decades of data proving these false”PROJECTIONS” from thier corrupt ‘models’!!
I am waiting to see who is going to try and tax the volcanos that will be the next HOOT!!
The ludicrus things these liberals ie. ‘Gore’ites, come up with are so laughable, it’s sad that those without the power or connections to beat this back have a voice. There are reasonable ways to treat our planet and many are doing it!
It is the decietful, the liars, greed and corruption that persists amoungst those that have wrestled for their power and won, that persist in the pillaging of the planet and abuses of powerless people.
All the rest of these organizations touting their caring plans for $$$$$ perpetuates ‘Goreness’. EnGOREging themselves on others sympathic largess of feelgood contributions/donations/support.

Fools and their money are soon parted and we still hear a beating drum of ‘Global Warming’ aka climate change.~~ The tune has now changed!

Here’s the actual reports for all those that don’t reside in the echo chamber of the willfully ignorant and ceaselessly dimwitted:
    http://www.ipcc.ch
Of course the real scientists, working from real data and using real scientific methods, come to real conclusions which are in complete juxtaposition to such experts as Rush Limpaugh, Glenn Beck and Louie Gohmert and world renowned periodicals like The Daily Mail, WorldNutDaily and The Drudge Report.
I’m no trained climate scientist but I think I’m smart enough to know which side I believe and which side is being conned by the fossil fuel industry.

  13. Biggerpicture says - Posted: September 28, 2013

Let’s put this argument into perspective.

Most of the American conservatives, otherwise known as the global warming deniers, you know the ones who feel they are experts on many subjects like climate change AND politics with little or no formal education in either, viewed George W’s re-election with a 51% majority of the US electorate as an overwhelming “mandate”, yet consider the opinion of 95% of highly educated climate scientist from around the world to be not quite convincing enough for them.

    Go figure!

  14. Parker says - Posted: September 28, 2013

Ahhh, I love how my first comment is so accurate!! Instead of coming up with a concrete plan, those so sure of the Human Caused Climate Change engage in name calling and personal attacks! Extremely Predictable!! Not to mention weird how some of you spend your Fri. nights!

Anyway, as I have said in the past comments-Logic tells me pumping stuff into the air isn’t good for us. I’m open to ideas to end that everywhere in the World! Climate has changed throughout our History. But I have my doubts about this Human Caused Climate Changed link.

When I’ve cited multiple scientists who debunk that idea, I get attacked, and they get attacked, specifically for where they get their funding. Well then, how many of the scientists that are so sure of the Climate Change theory are reliant on govt. checks, and want to keep the gravy train on their research going?

And what makes me further doubt the Climate Change stuff is how it becomes a matter of personal attacks when it’s questioned! When people get so defensive, that makes you really wonder, huh?

So again, if people are so sure of this Human Caused Climate Change theory, (as again, I am all game for a plan to stop pumping stuff into our air), what’s the rational plan to get the whole world behind this ‘Global’ issue? And when I say plan, I don’t mean merely an increase in the gravy train of funding, nor do I mean a call for name calling and personal attacks!

  15. cosa pescado says - Posted: September 28, 2013

The last scientists you cited were laughable. Please post them again so we can all be reminded of it. Didn’t one of them later come out and retract everything?
Yeah, they did. You continue to be duped, how does that make you feel?
Read my comment again. I don’t think you understood it.

  16. tahoe Pizza Eater says - Posted: September 28, 2013

CAN’T YOU SEE ! ! ! Ralph Cramden explains it very well. I’ll simplify it. These scientists are attempting to fleece the government of our hard earned money. Fear plays an important role. First the scientists must create fear that if the government doesn’t spend this money, the world will be doomed. Then the scientists claim for a few billion dollars they can figure a way to save the world. Then the scientists get the money. THAT’S HOW SIMPLE IT IS.

  17. BijouBill says - Posted: September 28, 2013

Only a real simpleton would believe there is some sort of unbelievably complex, obviously impossible conspiracy going on with 10’s of 1000’s of highly trained climate scientists from every corner of the planet who are supposedly hellbent on defrauding the American taxpayer. The source for the IPCC I cited in my previous post was just one report of many and it included 209 lead authors and 50 review editors from 39 countries and more than 600 contributing authors from 32 countries.
If you actually believe that these thousands of highly educated, highly disciplined scientists from every inhabited place on earth are in cahoots to steal your “hard earned tax dollar” you need to immediately pull your head out of your rush.
Maybe if I used CAPS or !!!! in every other sentence my opinions would carry more intellectual weight. Nah, that’s obviously untrue. :)

  18. tahoe Pizza Eater says - Posted: September 28, 2013

This reminds me of the movie Twelve Angry Men. When Henry Fonda is smart enough to figure out that the defendant is innocent, he slowly shows the eleven other jurors his reasons. Step by step the prosecutor’s case is destroyed by the jurors that begin to pay careful attention to the important little details. When the movie concludes all twelve jurors are convinced that witnesses told little lies that couldn’t be true, and the jurors know that the defendant is innocent. Here in this forum more people are beginning to look at important details and realize that these scientists are lying. Bill, you are not looking at the important details. You even admit that you are basing your opinion on your faith that the scientists would not lie.

  19. Parker says - Posted: September 28, 2013

Of the multiple scientists I cited, I never cited one! that retracted their disbelief in the Human Caused Climate Change. LTN wrote a story about one, but I never cited one! Period! Liberals do get their facts mixed up!

When you work, and hope to survive, in the private sector, you can’t whine about a supposed problem all the time! If there’s a problem, you’re expected to offer a solution! The bureaucratic way of whining, as a means to get never ending funding, just doesn’t pay the bills in the real world!

  20. BijouBill says - Posted: September 28, 2013

Hey Zeus, this fish guy and everyone else with this whole climate thing is too much. I am greater than 60 years old hippie from the past. I protested and fought for what is/what right on on these issues back in the 60’s and 70’s. No one cared. Now it is trendy. Guess what? I did not breed to reproduce. Now I do not care. China, Russia, India and many more wanna be industrialized nations are not going to care either. Do the right thing, give it up. If you have breeded and reproduced, pray your children do not. The world is not, no matter how many conservationist feel good band-aid’s you put over the gaping wound, it is still a gaping wound that is going to fester until the infection eventually kills the earth a few years earlier. Really, South Lake Tahoe is flat and an easy cycle everywhere. How many of you take the extra 10 minutes to ride your bike rather than drive. Be honest. No one is going to answer that question because in the end, you/they are all wanna be world savers that are not going to even give up a few “luxury entitlements” of your life to really start walking the walk. Really, take a moment and HONESTLY reflect. You are all a bunch of hypocrites.

  28. Ralph Cramden says - Posted: September 29, 2013

Some “alleged” top climate scientist from some “Clown College” called the Massachusetts Institute of Technology lambasted a new report by the UN’s climate bureaucracy that blamed mankind as the main cause of global warming and whitewashed the fact that there has been a hiatus in warming for the last 15 years.

“I think that the latest IPCC report has truly sunk to level of hilarious incoherence,” said Dr. Richard Lindzen. “They are proclaiming increased confidence in their models as the discrepancies between their models and observations increase.”

“Their excuse for the absence of warming over the past 17 years is that the heat is hiding in the deep ocean,” Lindzen added. “However, this is simply an admission that the models fail to simulate the exchanges of heat between the surface layers and the deeper oceans.”

“However, it is this heat transport that plays a major role in natural internal variability of climate, and the IPCC assertions that observed warming can be attributed to man depend crucially on their assertion that these models accurately simulate natural internal variability,” Lindzen continued. “Thus, they now, somewhat obscurely, admit that their crucial assumption was totally unjustified.”

Scientists have been struggling to explain the 15-year hiatus in global warming, and governments have been urging them to whitewash the fact that temperatures have not been rising because such data would impact the upcoming climate negotiations in 2015.

The Associated Press obtained documents that show the Obama administration and some European governments pressured UN climate scientists to downplay or even omit data that shows the world hasn’t warmed in over a decade.

Here’s what the IPCC said prior to being forced to (once again) lie to all the people of the world:

“According to most climate models, we should have seen temperatures rise by around 0.25 degrees Celsius (0.45 degrees Fahrenheit) over the past 10 years. That hasn’t happened. In fact, the increase over the last 15 years was just 0.06 degrees Celsius (0.11 degrees Fahrenheit) — a value very close to zero,”. .. “This is a serious scientific problem that the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) will have to confront when it presents its next Assessment Report late next year.”
    – United Nations Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change lead author Hans von Storch

They’ll have to confront their own lies and distortions… BUT WAIT – the won’t have to do it UNTIL NEXT YEAR!!! Why don’t they have to do it now? Why do they get a reprieve until next year? Who grants these reprieves?

    Just wondering…

  29. Parker says - Posted: September 29, 2013

Tea Total, I can’t believe you can’t see the personal nature of your blog? But more importantly, if you’d actually read what I post!

I clearly stated that I’m all for reducing or eliminating pollutants into the air! But if only the U.S, does it, then I have to ask, what good does that do to a supposed ‘Global’ problem? Especially if the effort to reduce those pollutants merely leads to a shifting of production elsewhere, where there are significantly fewer environmental restrictions?

  30. cosa pescado says - Posted: September 30, 2013

Raplh not citing a direct quotation is plagiarism.

I am just guessing you copy/pasted all of that. And I’ll bet that it is from a questionable source.

Jeez Parker, when are you going to get it.
Nothing will happen because people like you fall for lies. Like the research you cited awhile ago you were so certain of. And then I come along and blow it out of the water, and you ignore it. You are so blinded by your politics.
The anti-science movement promoted by conservatives is an intellectual cancer.
Unlike many deniers, you aren’t so dumb that you are unaware of how dumb you are. But you still remain ignorant in the face of compelling reason and evidence.

Pointing the finger at the science for not having a solution is cowardly. There is a solution but we are unwilling and/or unable to do anything. Partly because of economics, and partly because of scientific illiteracy.

Parker, you still haven’t been able to tell me the difference between weather and climate. And you know what it is. But you won’t because your ego would take a minor hit.
I know you now think that anthropogenic climate change is real. And you are still anti-science. And part of the problem. Not just on this global issue, but probably on many others. You are one of the people who enable the frauds of the Pipe Club to gain any traction.

I wish there were a way to withhold the advancements of science from certain people. Scientists are now planning for the future, which will be different. And the anti-science people will benefit, even though they don’t deserve any of it.

    Fishy thing,
Cool site… for regurgitating ridiculous talking points. “If they say this, then you say that!” Funny thing, some of their own rebuttals dating back over a decade have been proven wrong, but they haven’t updated their drivel. For the longest time you people have poo-pooed any possible solar influences, as does this site, but now some of your own “scientists” are pointing to sun’s decreased activity as a reason for the lack of warming!

Simple fact is that all your “scientists” are befuddled by the failure of their own theory and the lack of warming over the last 15 years. But don’t worry, they are going unto confront this problem next year. Yeah… right.

    Ralph Cramdog,
You are paraphrasing a column from the lunatic fringe website the Daily Caller by John Bastasch in your last three posts but you have failed to give credit where credit is due for these ideas.
The billionaire nutjob Koch bros., who inherited the fossil fuel conglomerate Koch Industries from their equally deranged John Birch Society founder father, have trained and financially supported shills like Mr. Bastasch through numerous front groups like the Heritage Foundation and ALEC to the tune of 100’s of millions of dollars.
For every climate scientist such as Dr. Lindzen quoted in this article there are 1000’s of equally accredited people to debunk his conclusions. If anyone doubts where this denier garbage comes from you can see where Bastasch and his ilk and get their Koch Bros. pedigrees here:

    Cosa et Bill
Why don’t you people simply try deal with the fact that despite increasing CO2 emissions there has been no global warming for the last fifteen years? Your IPCC flaks apparently don’t want to even address “this serious problem” until next year???

It’s amusing and gratifying to see that the infamous “Hockey Stick” which you all were waving about so vigorously (and I might add, threateningly!) not so long ago, has been, over the course of the last fifteen years, somehow slowly (and no doubt painfully) shoved up your…uh…backside. Now, whilst you out there screeching and squawking about the non-existent “global warming” the rest of us can all clearly see that absurd hockey stick… “sticking out” (pun intended), and yes, we laugh and snicker about it as we know it cannot be pleasant or comfortable; but rather than do the obvious and try to extract it, it seems your course of action is either to pretend it’s not there (which we find hilarious!), or to wear it as a badge of honor and attempt to convince us illiterate, knuckle-dragging “deniers” that it’s not only enjoyable and beneficial but something we ought all to experience!

Sorry, but no thank you- you can keep your hockey stick… right where it is.

  35. worldcycle says - Posted: September 30, 2013

Next thing you know, the fish is going to point out that you do not know the definition of “climate”. Why? because climate is the long-term prevalent weather conditions of an area, determined by latitude, position relative to oceans or continents, altitude, and so on usually over the term of 30 years. Soooo, you are only talking about 15 years here.

If the truth ever be told, this whole conversation about conventions, scientists, years, yada yada are moot points. Until the worlds resource use declines nothing is going to change except for the worse. Reduction of world resource use is only going to come about by a reduction in population. Take your pick, war over limited resources (lets not forget water), war over my religion is the chosen one to inherit the spoils or disease and famine, quite possibly as a by product of the first two. Then the survivors can crawl out of where ever they successfully hid themselves and choose to make the world a better place or start all over screwing it up again.

Gobble it up, buy your new iPhone, get that new fuel guzzling heap, water your yard every day and keep the lights burning. Enjoy it while you can.

In fact such defensiveness just makes everyone doubt the whole Human Caused/ Climate Change issue even more so!

  37. hmmm... says - Posted: October 2, 2013

@Parker: here’s an effective personal solution- watch less TV, use less stuff, have fewer children or none at all, love your neighbor as yourself. Go beyond labels such as conservative or liberal. Think deeply, speak carefully. Share. Walk in the moonlight. Tell someone you love them. Remember that it’s not just OUR world. Say grace before you eat. Perhaps then you and your kind can become human again.
