Drug Free Coalition looking for members
South Tahoe Drug Free Coalition is looking for people who are concerned about the area’s party and drug culture and want to help decide how a grant can be used to create lasting change.
In September, Tahoe Youth & Family Services was awarded a Federal Drug Free Communities grant on behalf of the South Tahoe Drug Free Coalition. The coalition was awarded $125,000 per year for the next five years to prevent and reduce youth substance use and change the culture in South Lake Tahoe to reduce adult use as well.
The Coalition meets monthly at the Al Tahoe/Boys and Girls Club, 1100 Lyons Ave., South Lake Tahoe on the second Monday of the month at 3:30pm. The next meeting will be Feb. 10th.

I hope they recruit young adults who grew up in Tahoe, to participate on this program committee. They grew up with all the drug culture around them, and are now free to comment on how to change the environment – if they are asked! Young adults always need encouragement to participate in “decision-making” activities and know that their input is valued. I also hope the folks managing the grant look into engaging “youth advisors” (from middle & high school) to participate as consultants. In some cities, there are seats on Commissions for “Youth Commissioners”, who bring a lot of real-time experience to the table.
@Irish Wahini – great point. We’re always looking for Coalition Members who can bring their own, unique, life experiences to the Coalition. We are in the process of establishing our Youth Advisory Council which will be made up of middle and high schoolers. This youth advisory council will provide valuable contribution to the direction in which the Coalition moves. Thank you for your comment.
