Americans use twice the amount of water they think they do, and appear to be particularly oblivious about how much H2O they flush down the toilet on a daily basis, according to new research.

In a paper published online Monday in the journal PNAS, a researcher concluded that Americans underestimated their water use by a factor of 2, and were only slightly aware of how much water goes into growing the food they eat.

The study’s conclusions were based on an Internet survey of 1,020 people, and comes amid a national drought that extends from the Pacific Coast to portions of the Mississippi Valley, with the most severe conditions in California.

I love it when somebody from So Cal ( the L.A. times no less) lectures us (Northern Ca.) about water use. What a joke!

Actually so Cal per capita water usage rates have dropped significantly. The sources are still relying on a massive subsidized system to ship northern water south, but at least conservation and effeciency are improving down there – except for palm springs. Then again, it is much easier to blame other people : as the title says “consumers unaware of water usage ” regardless of north or south.

In McClintock’s conference call he pointed out that two storage damns, Shasta (expansion) and Auburn, both have their foundations completed. Auburn has the tunnel cutting done for the water turbine feeds also completed.

Had either of these been completed there would be far fewer problems with water in California today and tomorrow.

You would also have a new clean source of electricity.

Both these projects have been stopped by legal actions from extremists on the left.
