USFS sets rules for Fourth of July
Possession of fireworks of any kind, including firecrackers and sparklers, is illegal in the Lake Tahoe Basin.
Campfires are not permitted on National Forest beaches or in the general forest. For those planning to barbecue on the beach, bring gas barbecues instead of charcoal.
The annual alcohol ban will be in effect at Nevada Beach, Zephyr Cove Resort, and Zephyr Shoals (the former Dreyfus Estate) from 6am to midnight on July 4. Additionally, county and state laws ban the possession or consumption of alcohol on the Truckee River from Tahoe City to Alpine Meadows and Chamber’s Landing Beach on the West Shore, from July 1-6.
These areas will be patrolled by law enforcement personnel from the Forest Service, Douglas and Placer counties, the Carson City sheriff’s Departments, and private security staff.
Traffic is expected to be heavy July 4 weekend. The Nifty Fifty Trolley stops at National Forest beaches along the South and West shores. At developed recreation sites, such as Kiva, Tallac and the Taylor Creek Visitor Center, parking is allowed only in designated parking spaces inside the parking lots, not along the roadway.
Day-use fees for the Fourth of July at Pope, Baldwin, and Nevada beaches will be $20 and at Zephyr Cove Beach $25 to cover increased security and facility maintenance costs of the holiday.
Pets are not allowed at National Forest designated swim beaches, including Nevada, Pope, Baldwin, Meeks and William Kent. Leashed pets are welcome at Kiva Picnic Area from Valhalla Boathouse/Pier to Tallac Point in South Lake Tahoe, Echo Lakes on Echo Summit, Zephyr Shoals and Hidden and Chimney beaches on the East Shore, Coon Street Beach (at the boat launch) in King’s Beach, and Kaspian and 64 Acres beaches in Tahoe City.
Trash cans may become full, so plan ahead and pack out all garbage.
Whoa!! Let’s use every opportunity to screw the visitors AND the locals and charge an arm and a leg just for the privilege of coming to the places their tax dollars pay for already, and while we’re at it, let’s add 42 extra regulations to make it even harder for them to enjoy it on the biggest American Holiday. Yeah. That’s government working for the people.
Dog, you do realize that these government agencies will be providing a great deal more man hours to provide the needed services for our inflated number of guests over the Fourth holiday weekend?
I guess YOU would just rather foot that bill and give the guests a free ride. Get it, your tax dollar paying for a premium Lake Tahoe visitor’s safe and pleasant experience that is partially provided by the dreaded government agencies that you despise. Until YOU need them of course!
Ungrateful simple minded shrew.
As usual, Fish. Attack ME, instead of the issue. Grow up.
What part of that analysis is inaccurate?
‘Dog, you do realize that..’
Stop right there. That won’t work. Even if they did realize it, they suffer from severe cognitive dissonance and parrot the political talking points.
The USFS needs to spend more money, given the nature of stupid people and what they did last year, they need more security. So who should pay for it? Not me. How about the users. Users, pay user fees. That is pretty equitable.
Taking an issue with firework regulations in The West is silly, so I doubt that is the issue here.
People like to bad mouth the vacation rentals. Last week a large number of chaperons and cooks for the 90 plus kids playing football in town stayed next door. Cooked safely on a huge BBQ. Class acts all the way around.
Last night my year round neighbors thirty plus year old stupid son woke me up by putting off fireworks in the street in front of my cabin. Such a #$@^% he left the trash in front of my yard so people would think I was the $#@*&$# for brains who set them off.
Picked the trash up and set them in front of their front door. Still can’t find him to talk about the event.
sunriser2 says,
Ever hear of the El Dorado County Sheriff. Give them a call, stop being afraid of getting involved.
Sheriff—530-573-3300
Even if the Sheriff is nice enough to just talk to the $#@^&*, instead of citing or arresting him, the message gets through. If you talk to him, he will node his head and then just do it again!
If the fee for the beach access goes up to provide more service, why do people have to volunteer on the 5th to clean the beaches ? I think the fee should be even higher and people should be hired to clean the beaches all day. What is the forest service doing with the money ?
Ever hear of any tourists volunteering to pick up trash at the beaches ? Or how about on the Truckee river? There are no regulations about alcohol on The Upper Truckee, so come party your brains out people, and of course leave all your beer cans and other garbage on the shore line, as usual, for me to pick up. Or worse, leave it in the river so it flows on down to the lake.
“Trash cans may become full, so plan ahead and pack out all garbage.”
Extra fees do not mean more/better service. And, since many of our beaches are Federal, I believe our visitors also pay THOSE taxes. They’re paying, just like we are.
The people will be here, regardless. So instead of having them at the beaches, where fire danger is minimal and surveillance is maximal, they’ll be on the hillsides, in the forests, burning it all down.
Good plan.
Sorry. I meant to say Federal or state. And most of our visitors are from NV or CA. So, again, they do pay taxes that go to our parks and law enforcement.
Extra dumpsters, open 6 yd. drop boxes, are placed before every 4th of July at Lakeside beach and Nevada beach and some of the other beaches as well. Edgewood used to have a larger overflow box delivered to handle the huge increase in the amount of trash.
The real problem here is to get enough people out there to clean the beaches and what washes ashore. South Tahoe Refuse will haul it away but it has to be disposed of properly in the containers for transportation to be picked over and recycled, and what’s left goes to the landfill in Sparks.
Have A Happy 4th!!! OLS
One would think even without raising entrance rates, the increased number of visitors resulting in increased revenues could be allocated to increased security and cleanup, additional dumpsters, etc.
What the government is doing here is following the lead of the lodging industry, airlines, private enterprise: higher demand, limited supply, higher rates.
The gentleman with the idea of using the higher rates to pay for thorough, professional, immediate cleanup of the beaches is spot on. Volunteers should not have to clean up after the profitable and messy tourists.
Porked – if you do not wipe your B*** with $100.00 bills then don’t come to Tahoe South
Im sure that most of the visitors, local or out of town, would have the same rules to follow in any national forests destinations throughout the west. The posting of this article is to remind people about the rules established for this specific day and weekend due to the increased use of booze, increased number of people all congested into the same amount of space, and increased amount of garbage. Its the same every year and yet the idiots are still out there causing significant problems, thus the need for more enforcement and rules. I personally wont go anywhere near a popular destination on this day of the drunk. I think dog is delusional, as always, in her finger pointing that this is somehow a bad idea to have rules for this day. I doubt seriously that these yahoos with their coolers full of coors are gonna hike somewhere since they cant have their booze on the beach. WAHHHHH.
