2 bears caught, 1 killed by car in Tahoe

Two black bears were captured Tuesday morning by the Nevada Department of Wildlife in separate traps in Incline Village. They will be released in the mountains above Lake Tahoe on Wednesday morning.

A third bear was hit and killed by a car near Spooner Summit early Tuesday morning. Since 1997, 170 black bears have been killed by cars in Nevada.

“July 1 marked the beginning of Bear Logic Month in Nevada and the bears quickly illustrated the reason why the special month to promote bear awareness in Nevada is needed,” Chris Healy, with Nevada Department of Wildlife, said in a statement.

The two bears at Incline were captured near homes in culvert bear traps. Both animals were displaying nuisance behavior related to access to human garbage. The 9-year-old female was first caught in the Lake Tahoe Basin in 2009. The yearling female had never been captured before by NDOW.

Officials believe this summer will be a busy for nuisance bear activity because the ongoing drought has dried up many natural food sources and bears are expected to greatly expand their search for food in urban areas.

KATHY,Bear activity has been minimal on my street this year as compared to years past. I live in Sierra Tract and there’s meadows and empty vacation homes all around making for a comfy place for bears to bed down. I did see one walking down Carson ave. the other morning heading towards 7-11. Going to get his mornin’ coffee I reckon, before he starts his morning routine of eating trash from the irresponsible people who don’t secure their food waste.
Don’t feed the bears!!! Growling Old Long Skiis

And Steven Pinkerton of IVGID thinks more studies are needed before implementing a mandatory animal proof trash container ordinance.

We frequently have bears, especially the night before garbage pick-up. Right in our own back yard as well. One has hibernated under our neighbors porch this past winter. ….It is a shame that drivers do not see them and/or they are driving to fast. Slow down people!

Huh, seems cars are more of a danger to the bears than hunters.

Bears would have no interest in coming out of the woods, down into town, if there was no food around.

IVGID – Get a grip! Incline Village has a bear problem because folks are not responsible about their trash. I guess the IVGID has the same mentality – “not my problem”. It is your problem, and Incline Village should require bear boxes. Wonder why there is such resistance…. Aesthetics? Have your bear box painted to match your house, or house-theme. My neighbor had her bear box painted with a Swiss Mountain theme – matches her house, and reminds her of her homeland. Oh, and it is also FUNCTIONAL!

I’ve had 9 different encounters with bears between being at work and doing my early morning workout walks so far this spring/summer. On a normal summer I’ll see around ten all season. And I’ve had a couple of those situations where a bear stood his ground when approached, which is not normal black bear behavior when they have an escape route. Had one yearling actually approach me taking five steps towards me before I picked up a pine cone to throw (but never actually threw) at it. Seems a pine cone is more scary than I am! But my takeaway from this situation is that if folks aren’t careful we just may have a bear/human interaction that will end in a human being injured and then a bear being killed. NO BUENO!

Re the IVGID comments: it is not just about using Wildlife resistant containers. It is about having to renegotiate the entire IVGID- Waste Management Contract which is not even up for renewal yet. You don’t fix the cracks in a home’s foundation by painting the house. The current proposal doesn’t even include wildlife proof recycle containers. The issue goes deeper than just placing new cans on the curb. Inquire with IVGID and learn the real story. Please people, get the facts.

Please ALLOW NO ACCESS to your GARBAGE…..
Very sorry for the bear that died. A Tragic loss.
Praying for a healthy release of the 2 Trapped Bears.
Please people be Bear Aware and Act Like You Care. Lock It up

Oh, God, not the beautiful brown bear that’s been in Spooner meadow!!!! Please tell me no….

  12. Chili Girl says - Posted: July 2, 2014

Tahoe Tessie…yes the WM is up for renewal and there are two years remaining on existing contract. Unfortunately sanitation negotiations take A LOT of time. Yes the proposal under Ordinance One and WM is the use of WM provided wildlife resistant containers for both trash and recycling (no more blue bags).

Irish Wahini…it’s not aesthetics, it’s the “trying to be all things to all people” mentality of the ivgid trustees and the grumpy old men who live in Incline
part time who think they call the shots. I agree with you…it’s time to get a grip and provide the Alpine community we live in with a “waste management” service that is conducive to wildlife. Please get your friends and family to turn up the pressure on the trustees. If this 9-year old bear comes back (she will) we all know what happens with the 3rd strike.

  13. Really? says - Posted: July 2, 2014

This has been going on in Incline and other places for decades. Enough with the stupid and insincere excuses already. If the people on my street here in the County can afford bear boxes so can the folks who live in Incline Village. Hiding behind contracts and other inconsequential “roadblocks” exposes one’s lack of integrity.

  14. Sharon says - Posted: July 2, 2014

They’ve been working on this contract for 1 1/2 years. Meanwhile more bears will die and the part-time bully retired residents will continue to say not my problem. They can’t even vote in the elections, yet the Trustees and the new GM cater to their whims. And those of us working and raising families here in town will have to live with the fallout of the No Action Trustees and IVGID GM.

  15. Chili Girl says - Posted: July 2, 2014

REALLY?…totally agree with you. Incline Village is dragging their feet and the bears are suffering. I have my bear tote and intend to purchase a permanent box this weekend…Randy/Tahoe Bear Box(Randy@bearbox.org) is running a “special” bear box sale to help.

The last sentence of the article is what gets me…”nuisance bears”…more like “nuisance people” who don’t care.

I try to scrub my dumpster spotless every year. Then a solid coating of pine sol along the entire top inside of the dumpster. Never had a problem yet.

I don’t think the speed of the cars matters much. The speed that the bears enter the roadway makes it almost impossible to avoid them

Last year I witnessed a bear run into a car in the parking lot of Sky Meadows. The people were looking for their rental. The car was going less than 10 mph.

The bear hit the passenger front fender of the car. The amount of damage was surprising. Crushed the front fender into the tire so the car had to be towed. Knocked most of the cosmetic plastic parts of the front too.

  18. KATHY says - Posted: July 3, 2014

The speed of the cars do matter ,Slow down, Its a issue for all of us to be bear aware,
