Correction: Update on bear vs. vehicle

The July 13 accident where a bear was killed on Highway 50 near Zephyr Cove did not involve a local teenager.

Lake Tahoe News apologizes for publishing wrong information.

“Our dispatch center cross referenced another person and vehicle with the same accident number. We have cleared up the issue,” Nevada Highway Patrol Trooper Dave Gibson told Lake Tahoe News.

Jose Cruz Calvillo-Vasquez of Sun Valley was traveling east on Highway 50 at 9:35pm when he struck a bear in the fast lane and knocked it into the slow westbound lane.

No people were injured.

It was well before 11:30pm because I passed the bear dead on the side of the road around 9:15pm.

How fast was Sanchez going ?

  3. Lori Thorne says - Posted: July 15, 2014

Alex Sanchez did NOT hit the bear – he swerved to avoid the already dead carcass and that is when the accident occurred! The fault is with the person who DID hit the bear and didn’t stop to make sure no one coming behind them would be injured. Alex’s injuries could have been so much worse! Thank God he is ok!

I read the comments on almost every article I read here. Most of the time they are very interesting and informative, often more than the article itself. This article is no different. How is it the LTN got this so wrong, again? Sounds to me like Alex is not at fault for killing a bear as the article states. As we know anyone who kills a bear up here is labeled. Even if an accident in a car people assume he was driving drunk, too fast, etc. Thanks for the comments to correct the record and I hope LTN gets a better understanding of the facts before they publish in the future. And rescind any incriminating comments if made incorrectly. The article should be focusing on the earlier hit and run and how Alex was an unfortunate victim of such ignorance.

    My two cents…

Lake Tahoe “News” please stop publishing false information. This article makes an already stressing situation worse by accusing a young man of hitting a bear, which he did NOT.

    People,

We would not intentionally publish wrong information. We provided the information given to us by the NHP. We have asked them to provide any other information besides what they already have. If and when they do so, we will clarify/correct the story as need be.

Yeah, the picnic basket was not far from the body. Thank goodness that Booboo got away…

Thank you for correcting the information in your article. It is truly sad about the bear but Alex was lucky he was in a large vehicle and not something that would have crumbled around him!
