Time to count butterflies

Do you like butterflies? Do you want to learn more about them?

North American Butterfly Association’s 40th annual Butterfly Count is July 20.

It is a long-term citizen-scientist project, involving almost 500 counts and thousands of volunteers throughout North America.

Much like the Audubon Society’s Christmas Bird Count, volunteers select a count area with a 15-mile diameter count circle and assemble a group to conduct a one-day census of all butterflies sighted within that circle. Experienced butterfly counters head out in small groups or on their own, but there is also a group for beginners.
