Power out in much of South Shore

image_pdfimage_print

There is no estimated time when power will be restored to thousands of South Shore Liberty Utilities customers.

Two circuits are out in Meyers that is affecting South Lake Tahoe, too.

Nevada Energy customers are also in the dark, except those with generators.

“This storm is wide spread,” Randy Kelly told Lake Tahoe News.

All of South Lake Tahoe, Meyers and Alpine County Liberty customers are in the dark.

Just spoke to liberty energy, power is slowly being restored up the grid working it’s way from Glenbrook through south shore to Meyers. They estimate another few hours for full restoration to SLT area. However, a word of , caution it could still take longer than estimated.

We’re putting a reverse 9-1-1 call out to all SLT residents.

  42. 26intahoe says - Posted: July 20, 2014

At about 9 power went up in Tahoe Valley Campground area.

  43. Lee says - Posted: July 20, 2014

    9:18pm, power now on.

Please, Facebook and Twitter are cool only if you do those things. Out in the valley south of Meyers on 89 we don’t have cell phone anytime and without electricity we have no internet so Facebook and Twitter don’t serve any purpose.

We were also without telephone service so a reverse phone call wouldn’t work either.

Time to bring infrastructure into the 21st century? Or at least a cell tower out here?

  44. lisa says - Posted: July 20, 2014

Power is on at lower pioneer trail.9:30

  45. Nancy Kerry, City Manager says - Posted: July 20, 2014

Please remember to locate and extinguish all of the candles that might have been lit during the outage.

Also, reverse 9-1-1 had difficulty reaching residents due to home phones not being activated during the power outage. We will be launching efforts to encourage residents to register their cell phones, which is the best way we can reach you with news and information during emergencies and urgent situations. Stay tuned for that information in the coming weeks.

Power back on in Al Tahoe

  47. Fifty year resident says - Posted: July 20, 2014

To Nancy Kerry. This situation reminds me of the Angora Fire no radio and no way for our community leaders to communicate with residents as to what is going on in our town. A lot of us do not have phone or internet service when the power is down. The rest most likly have cordless phones that will not work either so a reverse 911 call really does not get the message out. The cell phone does not work in my neighborhood on the best day. We need a live radio station to keep us informed as to what is going on in our community when these types of problems arise. Did we not learn that lesson from the Angora Fire?

  48. J&B says - Posted: July 20, 2014

Thank you LTN for the update. Read this on my cell phone this afternoon so knew what was going on.

  49. Lee says - Posted: July 20, 2014

If internet, Facebook, Twitter, and cell phone are going to be an important element of public safety notification then there has to be infrastructure to support it. If environmental restrictions prevent cell towers from being installed then let’s figure how to do it.

Doesn’t matter how many tweets someone sends out or how many posts are on LTN if no one can receive them.

  50. 4-mer-usmc says - Posted: July 20, 2014

While I use cordless phones I keep one land line telephone plugged in to a phone jack and I did receive a reverse 9-1-1 call regarding the power outage and a number to call in the event anyone at my residence needed oxygen, etc. I think encouraging individuals to register their cell phones so they can be reached with news and information is a great idea.

  51. Ralph says - Posted: July 20, 2014

Yes. We need a radio station with a backup generator so we can know what is going on.

It is a public safety issue. If the comercial radio stations won’t. Then the city needs to have a emergency access station. Just like caltrans reports etc.

    4-mer-usmc

Technology has changed. I can appreciate the fact you have a wall jack phone available. However for those of us that have Charter when the internet goes down so does the phone. In my neighborhood the cell phone just does not work. To get the word out to just some residents just is not a safe and effective way all by itself. The Federal Government has the emergency broadcast system. This same thing should be in our community with one or both of our radio stations being a place we all can go to for information during these types of situations.

The reverse 911 and cell phone notifications are helpful as well however by themselves are a very risky and ineffective way to communicate with all local residents with just those methods.

  53. admin says - Posted: July 20, 2014

Liberty says the California side, which it represents, is restored.

Zac Brownn was great … read about it on LTN on Tuesday!

  54. copper says - Posted: July 20, 2014

Checking in late, in part because the power and consequently the internet were down in the Carson Valley for several hours as well.

A phone call to Nevada Energy predicted it would be up by 9:15; they beat that estimate by about an hour.

But although I don’t much like Frontier service, I continue to have a hardwired landline through them for precisely the reason that many here have mentioned. Living down the hill we have many fewer outages than when I lived at the Lake; I’m surprised anyone up there has given up their hard wired lines.

On the other hand, I didn’t receive any sort of reverse 911 notification. But I’m fairly competent when it comes to figuring out that the power is out. I learned how by living for 25 years in South Lake Tahoe.

But, for my fellow Minderville residents, anyone foolish enough to drive up to the Lake with a gas tank that might need filling up before they return is pretty much asking for trouble – or, at least, an outrageous gasoline expense. I have no good idea why the gas stations up the hill aren’t competitive with the real world – it can only be because, like so many other businesses up there, they’re focused on fleecing the tourists and the locals just get caught up in the net.

Handyman hotline….. really? Advertising? What could you have done? Put candles up?

  56. Mama Bear says - Posted: July 21, 2014

Power in Meyers (South Upper Truckee) came back on about 9:10PM. Not too bad.
I agree that we need to have a better way to communicate power outages, emergencies, etc. The local radio stations are canned programming. This means no humans to contact or be contacted by. This doesn’t help. We were listening to 106.9 from Reno. They don’t broadcast Tahoe problems. And, on top of that, we are pretty limited by location as to what we can actually hear. Some of these stations are sketchy at best.
A local emergency broadcast station is a fantastic idea!

  57. Tahoeclan says - Posted: July 21, 2014

It would also be great if the utility companies posted status on their website. A live local radio station would help, bring it online in situations like this to keep everyone informed.

  58. Thirty year resident says - Posted: July 21, 2014

My wife and I took a walk yesterday early evening and met a neighbor who was on the phone to a city council member whom she knows. The council member related the outage was from Reno and it would be out until Tuesday. Maybe more facts were needed. All’s well because we have a generator and experienced no hardship, for us anyway. City council member? Now I know why things get done the way they do.

I think we, the residents of South Lake Tahoe, should be GRATEFUL and give THANKS to our public safety officers!!!!!! The Police, Sheriff, Fire, Paramedics and agency Dispatchers saved the city from disaster last night. Radio traffic was amazing….every part of South Lake Tahoe was involved….fires, personal injury, bank alarms, fights, etc…..oh yeah, no traffic lights. Gridlock and our safety personnel responded to each and every call with expediency and patience. THANK YOU!!!!!

  60. 4-mer-usmc says - Posted: July 21, 2014

    Fifty year resident:

I agree that a Local Emergency Broadcast System in our community would be a very good addition to the reverse 9-1-1 system, but who is going to pay for that? I don’t think the residents in this town would be willing to assess themselves any type of fee to make that type of Emergency System available.

    Missy:

I agree that we should all be grateful and thank our public safety officers for a job well done.

  61. southie says - Posted: July 21, 2014

For situations like this, it would be nice if the LTN website could timestamp the comments instead of just date stamp them. Fortunately many posters realized the lack of the timestamp and included a time in their posts.

  62. David Kelly says - Posted: July 21, 2014

encourage residents to register their cell phones not me it’s the government tracking you all over again.

  63. mike barnett says - Posted: July 22, 2014

We were staying at a motel near the casinos when the power went out; we waited for a couple of hours before trying to call the power company for an update. They get an F. First, their IVR system is horrendous (like most companies)and serves to route you in a circle rather than ever take you to a live body. After several tries, we finally did speak to someone who couldn’t have been less helpful or more rude. Trying to get an idea of an estimated time of restoral and how widespread the outage was was futile. It’s fine to wish the local government could do more; in reality, the power company has the responsibility of not only restoring the power as quickly as possible, but more important, provide its customers timely, updated information.

  64. Worried Resident says - Posted: July 22, 2014

I think that there should be a radio station working at all times during an emergency. And for those that don’t have internet register your phones. But it is a must on the radio they should be supplied with working genaraters.

  65. Mama Bear says - Posted: July 22, 2014

Internet won’t work when the power is out unless you have a battery operated laptop or tablet (I am still stuck with a boat anchor on a desk). And even then, you must have usable WI-FI. I have a couple of old battery operated radios for emergencies and would love it if the local stations would broadcast updates to situations such as the power outage of the other day. I think the local stations should add this to their service for a nominal fee. Businesses pay for advertising. Why don’t we have the city pay for emergency broadcasts??

  66. Tahoe Parent says - Posted: July 22, 2014

We have become so dependent on technology. Remember when the power went out and you had no cell phone or internet for updates? Although, I do recall a message on the power company line that would say they were aware of the outage and working on it. Lets not blame the City or their communication systems. How hard would it have been for Liberty to put a message on their line?

  67. 35 yr resident says - Posted: August 5, 2014

Wow – no power for a few hours…. Poor babies. Light a candle, play a game of cards or yahtzee, oh maybe sit and chat and laugh with your family. I recall when we had no power for 12 days in a row when the roads were closed. Nobody starved, froze or died from it. Everybody helped each other through it. If you need medical help, we do have a hospital that is powered by generators – go there. Forget about NOT having the use of your phone and internet just for awhile.
