Government agencies to poison Alpine creek

image_pdfimage_print

The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service plans to chemically treat Silver King Creek in Alpine County in an attempt to restore native Paiute cutthroat trout.

Retenone will be used along 11 miles of the stream from Llewellyn Falls downstream to Silver King Canyon. The lower reaches of three tributaries – Tamarack Creek, Tamarack Lake Creek and Coyote Valley Creek — will also be treated.

The goal is to have the Paiute cutthroat trout be the only trout species in the creek. The rotenone will kill off the other fish. Then the creek will be restocked with the Paiute.

Plans are for all of this to occur in late August.

Also participating in this fish kill/restocking are the U.S. Forest Service and California Department of Fish and Wildlife. This is not the first time the agencies have done this.

    Sounds like genocide to me

Retenone causes Parkinson’s. But I guess Uncle Sam knows best. Put humans at risk for some frakin fish. Wonderful plan Sam.

Because it has worked so well in the past? More poison in the environment. Just what we need.

‘Because it has worked so well in the past?’

    Actually it has.
The article (conveniently?) leaves out a lot of details. If the author encouraged you to read the research and results of other projects it would be a lot harder for author to whip you up into a frenzy and support their side.

A ridiculous waste of government money! No it doesn’t work and the Paiute are not pure bread fish so they are truly non native. When will people wake up and question this foolish experiment. Millions of dollars spent at Fallen Leaf and the project has failed, but yet they continue to push the agenda because they can’t admit they are wrong. Killing healthy fisheries, poisoning pristine water and that’s ok? Fish you need to go out for a day of fishing on Fallen Leaf. Just so we are clear…..just because they tell you it’s true it’s not always true. We are talking about government employees justifying their jobs not factual science. Go see for yourself before you come back with a self righteous “I know because they wrote it and said so response”. My entire life has been fishing the waters in Alpine County and the Lake Tahoe basin.

They poison the water and fish, yet no tree thinning at Echo lakes because of a frog. Looks like someone speaks with forked tongue.

Just another fishing/angling opportunity taken away! Shouldn’t all that work be on a volunteer basis by those that think it is the right thing to do? Maybe if the Government agencies were not being paid to do these projects, they would not be so fast to get them done and maybe more of the money would go into science rather then action with bad science. Too many projects have failed after Millions of dollars being spent. The Tahoe Keys, Fallen Leaf Lake, Echo Lake, Upper Truckee River, Spooner Lake, Lake Tahoe, Glen Alpine, Truckee River, Numerous Lakes in the High Sierras, Desolation Wilderness Lakes… the list keeps building and how many of these projects are backed by good science? The money has to be spent on action or they lose the funding, action with bad science.

Looks like the authors intentional informational deficit is working as planned.

‘We are talking about government employees justifying their jobs not factual science. Go see for yourself before you come back with a self righteous “I know because they wrote it and said so response”. My entire life has been fishing the waters in Alpine County and the Lake Tahoe basin.’

Please, explain how the science in this specific case is invalid. Restoration work has been going on since 1985.
    ‘Go see for yourself’
    Read a research paper.
Your slander of science is disgusting.
Good thing science can continue unimpeded by the whining of the simpletons.

Cosa, a self proclaimed expert in all fields?!?!? Yes I am a simpleton, one that has vast experience and knowledge of the local fishery. I once sat in a commission meeting across from me, a state biologist. The science you proclaim my simple mind can’t comprehend…..Asked a simple question from my simple mind in regards to rehabilitation. “what fishery are you restoring in regards to the Upper Truckee River Restoration”. She didn’t know! Funny thing, I didn’t see you at the meeting. Give me scientific fact and I will agree. Throw money at a problem, foolish over spending by government employees. There is a funny ad on TV where a young lady proclaims “you can’t lie on the internet”. Sounds familiar….As for whining, if the shoe fits. No whining in my post. Show me an example in regards to the local fisheries where there has been success from “restoration”.

The upper truckee river sunset restoration is a crime. Watch them destroy that fishery… I bet you can catch a fish there when they are done with their man made river.
