South Lake Tahoe and El Dorado County’s draft Parks, Trails and Recreation Master Plan is now available online for review.

Officials say the plan provides direction for enhancing recreation opportunities for residents and visitors by increasing collaborative efforts and focusing resources where they are most needed.

The key recommendations are: regional coordination and collaboration, park and facility maintenance, renovations and improvements, new park, facility and trail development, recreation activities, programs and events, and operations and management.

There will be an open house Sept. 25 at 7pm for the public to share ideas on the recommendations within the plan. It will be at the recreation center at 1180 Rufus Allen Blvd., South Lake Tahoe.

A survey about the plan is online.

I just read through this “plan”. It is so full of pie-in-the-sky idealism and jingoism that is was a very hard read. A couple of observations: the suggestion that the City has not been able to monitor or track the usage of their facilities is absolutely absurd. My read on this is that they can’t produce data to support their plan, so they simply expect citizens to believe that they don’t have the numbers. The plan further suggests that there are no supervisors in the Recreation Department, and that the structure of the Department prevents them from proper supervision. Who exactly created the structure? Al Queda?

There is a suggestion to cover the field at the LTCC, so that it can be used in winter. Snow Globe couldn’t have anything to do with this, could it? Of course, conveniently, that isn’t mentioned.

Of course there are myriad opportunities to improve recreation facilities, but any problem starts with taking responsibility and recognizing your failures. I don’t see any indication of that in this plan. And, they want to add at least three full-time positions. Until there is real and tangible accountability in all aspects of local government, no plan will produce the results that we need. As the ads on TV recently say: “…that isn’t how any of this works”. But they want more money, oh, do they want more money.
