A motorcyclist refused treatment Tuesday after striking the side of an extended cab pickup in South Lake Tahoe.

Both eastbound lanes of Highway 50 were blocked about 1pm Sept. 23 in front of the Pine Cone center.

Neither man involved in the accident wanted to comment.

An officer said the motorcyclist had been splitting lanes. The front wheel of the bike was mangled after striking the right side of the truck just in front of the tire.

Kamikazi lane splitting, apparently, is legal.

KAMIKAZI LANE IS RIGHT! I REALLY THINK THIS LANE-SPLITTING SHOULD BE ILLEGAL. WHEN THESE MOTORCYCLES RACE BETWEEN LANES & CARS, OFTEN THEY ARE IN BLIND SPOTS. THEY EXPOSE ALL TO ACCIDENTS.

Barely anything else is legal in California, but somehow this idiotic practice is allowed, go figure.

The Public always has opinions, many times the Public has NO real information about a subject.
Wild lane splitting is NOT legal.
Lane splitting, allowed in California for motorcyclists, has proven to be safe, and helps with traffic congestion AND reduces rear end collisions, where the motorcyclists nearly always comes out worst. Lane splitting is extremely common and safely done on Freeways. There is SELDOM a reason for it to be done on city streets, and often, there, it is not at all safe. I do not know the biker in this incident, nor what he was doing, but, if lane splitting is done properly (the CHP has published guidelines for doing it!), it is proven safer than NOT doing it, believe it or not! THE problem is when it is done in an unsafe manner. We’ve all seen it happen in an annoying and unsafe manner. I don’t want the law changed.
If I had my druthers, I’d want more citations written for unsafe lane changes, splitting lanes, etc. I also want severe penalties for loud exhausts; loud thumping music from cars, and a lot of other things. UNfortunately, no matter the laws, some will always flaunt them. The Public does not support, read that TAXES, larger police forces to deal with these more minor things.
Common courtesy was a LOT more common when I grew up. That’s not to say we did not have some wild drivers…and wild bikers.
To help avoid accidents, motorcyclists also are allowed by Federal and State laws to have headlight modulators. Many do not know this. It is proven, like helmets, bright clothing, etc., to help prevent or minimize accidents.
