Judge: Alta can keep snowboarders out

By Tom Harvey, Salt Lake Tribune

A federal judge on Tuesday dismissed snowboarders’ claims that Alta Ski Resort banned them because of stereotypes that they are “undesirable people with obnoxious habits and characteristics.”

Instead, U.S. District Judge Dee Benson said there are rational reasons for Alta to ban snowboarding, one of only three resorts to do so in the United States.

Benson wrote in a 30-page opinion that federal court was not the right arena for the snowboarders to argue they should be allowed on the Utah resort’s famed runs such as Baldy Chutes.

“There are many forums plaintiffs can resort to in an attempt to accomplish their goal of snowboarding down the Baldy Chutes at Alta,” Benson wrote in his decision. “Seeking an injunction from this court is not one of them.”

The boarders had sued Alta and the U.S. Forest Service in January, arguing they were being irrationally discriminated against and deserved protection under the 14th Amendment to the Constitution, which historically has been used on cases involving discrimination based on race, gender and sexual orientation.

That’s hysterical. Snowboarders think they should get equal protection under the 14th Amendment? They are discriminated against as a class?
    Cry me a river.

I’ll be skiing Alta from now on. Nice work Judge. Most snowboarders are a complete nuisance and an irritation that needs to be held for their disrespectful actions. I work at one of our local resorts and they cause nothing but trouble for everyone trying to have a great time! Bah-bye you punks.

Don’t they have to have some CLASS to begin with to be recognized as a class???? I have yet to see THAT among most of them.

Dead-on. Rock on, Alta. First mountain I ever skiied in the West and it set the standard. Snowboarders, take your bad attitudes and go home. Cry over it!

The first four people on this thread must be dinosaurs that don’t get out much anymore . I am in my 40s, a skier, and all of the boarders I hang with are respectful well rounded human beings. Our son snowboards, he is 17. Yes he is a little wild, but still respectful. I grew up skiing at an academy in the East, and I can tell you the crap we used to pull makes these ‘punk’ snowboarders from CA today look like a bunch of girl scouts. Actually the problem with the posters above me seems to be that whiny, self entitled CA crybaby syndrome perpetuating itself into their twilight years. Try golfing instead. More suited to your pace of life at this point! ROTFLMAO!
