Letter: Students deserve a vibrant LTCC

image_pdfimage_print

To the community,

Wait, what? Safer? Yes! As a 20-plus-year South Lake Tahoe resident and a recently retired FBI agent, I have experienced Lake Tahoe Community College as a student, a guest speaker, and as an occasional criminal justice instructor.

Over the years, these connections have proven to me just how essential LTCC is in giving our local youth a pathway toward a productive future. Whether students come to the college interested in criminal justice, the Lake Tahoe Basin Fire Academy, early childhood education, wilderness leadership and education, medical and dental office work, or any of the many programs offered at the college, LTCC is our town’s ticket to a good job.

Even better, many of these jobs directly contribute to a safer, healthier community for all of us. When our local youth has the opportunity to learn in a world-class, cutting-edge setting, they’re on the path toward a great job and a satisfying career for life. And that’s something we can all benefit from.

Please vote yes on Measure F this November to help LTCC keep our kids going in the right direction.

Hey Chris, Happy retirement!Join me in the old fogey club! I met you several years ago thru STR.
Hope you’re enjoying life. I’m still unsure about how I’ll vote on measure F. OLS

All the sales pitches aren’t gonna make it an acceptable bond measure.
NO on Measure F – Final Answer !

The college is already a pretty spectacular place, and still is having a problem attracting even a breakeven number of students.

Cops and firemen never think we have enough.

Please remember all the arguments over combining the various fire districts into one, more efficient, more manageable economic unit. Remember the the confusion and finger pointing in the aftermath of the Angora fire?

The “if you build it they will come” people should realize that we don’t need hundreds of more cops, firemen, childcare people locally. The town and surrounding area is shrinking, now about 25,000. more cops and firemen will have to go somewhere else for work, and local property owners will foot the bill.

The lake valley fire dept has, on this next ballot, a 600 percent increase in taxes to support what they already do, because they took grant and state money up the yazoo, grew and developed services that the local economy and population could not support. The free , grant and state money is no longer available or drastically reduced.

The goofy statement I now read is how we can people all the environmental agencies with locals if we had a college teaching the courses. Please go look and see how many jobs there are out there in Tahoe in the Environmental engineering, biology etc etc fields that do not require an advanced degree.

And, there really aren’t that many full time employees involved. The forest service is a good example of that fact. Tons of seasonal employees who are on unemployment half the year.

Vote no on H and F and avoid an expensive pair of boondoggles.

Thanks for your comments, Chris. At the last Candidates’ Forum at the college, many questions centered around creating wonderful recreation opportunities for visitors, and, oh by the way, residents. Aren’t educational opportunities equally compelling and of longer lasting significance? I want more than a roof that doesn’t leak and some minimal upgrades. We seem to feel it’s OK to be minimal in our support of education (portable classrooms for our schools are good enough). I went to fine public schools that older people paid for. It’s my turn to pay back for their support.

Since when do the students deserve anything? Their job
is to study hard and matriculate and it doesn’t have to be handed them on a silver platter.
Nothing but lightweight courses for the most part.
How many public safety grads can we use.
World class, cutting edge you got to be kidding me. Can’t wait for our first Nobel prize winner.
Let’s be realistic. A community college would be nice if we can afford the bill.

“Since when do the students deserve anything?”

    I don’t know LB.

    Maybe because they pay……….TUITION!

Or in other words………they are the paying CONSUMER in this equation!

  7. legal beagle says - Posted: October 15, 2014

BP they only pay a very small part of the cost.
So what, you and I pay the great majority. The cost
to educate per student is insanely high with over paid
educrats and ancillary personnel. Just look at the
LTCC catalog to see how much is spent on other than
    educating.

How about breaking enrollment records and have over crowding issues first. Still….NO!!
