The 6-foot, 5-inch Alexander C. Cushing was a Harvard-educated, World War II Navy veteran and Wall Street lawyer.

Nov. 28 would have been Cushing’s 101st birthday. He lived to 92.

He left his mark on Lake Tahoe when he almost single-handedly brought the 1960 Winter Olympics to Squaw Valley, which at the time was a no-nothing resort that he owned.

Note that the Time magazine cover fro 1959 refers to him as Alec. However, he went by Alex.

This Time magazine cover shot of Alex was a gift from me to him. I interviewed Alex and he mentioned that he had appeared on the cover of Time, but didn’t have any copies. My staff and I spent a lot of time tracking down this epic cover shot and Alex was thrilled when I gave him the last remaining copy. The interview appeared in my magazine, Ski West, which became the number one selling ski magazine, in newsstand sales, in seven countries. I sold the magazine in 1990.

    Steve,

Was the story about how great Alex was for Tahoe and the ski industry or how great you are at name dropping and self importance.

Sorry Bill to leave this on one of your stories but Steve kinda of ran away with his own inflated memory of himself and his accomplishments.

Steve Kubby, Interesting story about Alex Cushing. When I was a tram attendant he came to Heavenly Valley and went to the top of the tram wth Hugh Killebrew. As I recall the “vibes” were a little intense. Don’t think they cared much for one another as they didn’t talk much and Mr. Cushing just looked out the back window of the tram, looking out at the lake.
That’s how I remember it anyways. OLS

    OLS,
Maybe Hugh had a kinda outsider doesn’t understand attitude. Billy/William seemed to be a hands on, do it person, maybe his dad was too. Seems to be a somewhat type of attitude around here. A guy apparently is an expert at Alpine survival and kinda looks down on the techno weenie university grads who seem to get caught in avalanches.
I grew up on the flats of S.F. Bay near San Jose. Seems the only thing I know anything about are Hondas.
