Mother Nature is crippling the ski season.

Homewood Mountain Resort has closed because of the lack of snow. The resort said if conditions improve, it will reopen.

January was a record dry month for the Lake Tahoe Basin. Resorts with little or no snow making capabilities are struggling to cope.

A storm is headed to the basin Thursday night is supposed to bring rain through Sunday. While the moisture is needed, it could wreak havoc on the already thin layer of snow at higher elevations.

The storm is expected to bring heavy winds. The National Weather Service in Reno has issued a high wind watch from Thursday evening through Friday evening.

Wonder how much snow Heavenly and Mt. Rose will get at the top during the coming storm.
I guess with global warming, Homewood can become a year around mtn bike park.

Sad, scary news for the SLT economy! I was happy to read the positive article about the Hard Rock — we do have to have back-up plans here in the mountains! Hot-tub spas at the top of the Gondola?

Irish, good idea. A Squaw-style “High Camp” at the top of the gondola would be great! We used to go up there at Squaw to ice skate, swim in the pool, and have lunch/cocktails in the summer. Good fun, and worth paying for the ride up. Right now that ride to the top at Heavenly in summer doesn’t justify the expense.

Heavenly has plans for expanding upper mtn experiences. Probably leaning towards more adventure.

BTW, a pass holder can get free rides all summer. Adjusted for inflation, the current pass is a huge discount prior to Vail operations.
