Updated 5:45pm:

A fire burning near Mammoth has consumed at least 40 structures and 7,000 acres. It is 50 percent contained.

The Round Fire is burning west of Highway 395 at the Sherwin Grade.

The communities of Paradise (not the one by Chico) and Swall Meadows are under a mandatory evacuation.

Fire officials said significant rain stopped the forward rate of the fire about 2am Saturday. Downed power lines and venting propane tanks make re-entry for residents dangerous.

The cause is under investigation.

One person has been injured.

    Be safe firefighters!

It’s odd to be submerged in rain and wind and read of a wildfire in an area that I drive through so often it almost seems like my back yard.

I agree with nbl in his wishes that our firefighters stay safe. This is a forum where public safety employees take a beating; it’s good to remind the folks protecting us that, despite the attacks, the overwhelming majority of us admire them, love them and support them.

And Bill; good work grabbing a photo. As a fellow ol’ f@rt, it’s good to see you still on the job. I hope you don’t have to drive that road as often as I do these days.
