·      TAMBA is hosting a work day on May 19 on the lower section of Mr. Toad’s Wild Ride Trail to do some enhancements and address erosion issues. Meet at the Toad’s parking area off Oneidas Road at 9am. Volunteers will ride into the Toad’s trailhead to get tools and for a safety briefing, work until 1pm, then have a barbecue and beer. Wear long sleeves, long pants, gloves, and a helmet. 

·      El Dorado County poet laureate Taylor Graham will be hosting a night of poetry on June 15 at 5:30pm at the South Lake Tahoe Library on Rufus Allen Boulevard.

·      The Tahoe Douglas Fire Protection District board is having a public hearing on May 23 at 2:30pm regarding the 2018-19 budget. The meeting will be at the Elks Point Road station.

·      The Zephyr Cove Library on May 30 at 4pm is showing “The Goonies” (rated PG). The movie and popcorn are free.

Time to apply for grants from Barton Foundation

The Barton Foundation will be awarding $50,000 in grant funding to improve community health.

This annual grant cycle provides funding for programs and services that positively impact the health of the local community. Applications are being accepted through May 31.

The Barton Foundation’s community grants fund local programs that address the area’s most pressing health needs, as identified by Barton Health’s 2015 Community Health Needs Assessment: mental health, substance abuse, and access to healthcare services. Grant proposals addressing one or more of these top three issues will be prioritized. 

Local organizations including government agencies, nonprofits, and schools are encouraged to apply.

·      The Kings Beach Center development team will host a public listening session on May 15 from 5 -7:30pm, offering community members a chance to learn about and weigh in on the proposed project. The meeting will be at North Tahoe Event Center in Kings Beach.

·      The Nickel Slots will be playing on the lawn at Valhalla on July 11 at 5pm. Tickets are $16, $12 for ages 12 and younger.

·      Tahoe Donner will be hosting a community “friend-raiser” in partnership with Project MANA and tech start-up Kynbo on June 4 at the Alder Creek Adventure Center and Cafe. It is designed to raise awareness about food insecurity and hunger in the North Lake Tahoe and Truckee community. Doors open at 5:30pm, with buffet from 6-8pm. The $25 tickets are available online

·      Managing Forests for Fire and Drought will be the subject of a May 31 talk by Malcom North, forest ecologist with the Forest Service Pacific Southwest Research Station. It will be at the Tahoe Environmental Research Center in Incline Village. Doors open at 5:30pm, talk starts at 6pm. Cost is $5. Register online.

·      Diamond Peak Ski Resort is now recognized for their sustainability initiatives as the first ski resort in Lake Tahoe to become STOKE certified. STOKE — Sustainable Tourism Operator’s Kit for Evaluation — is the world’s first sustainability certification body with standards built specifically for surf and ski tourism operators.

·      Dump Day in South Lake Tahoe is June 9, 8am-4pm. For details, go online.

·      South Tahoe Public Utility District received the certificate of achievement for excellence in financial reporting for the district’s 2017 annual financial report. The certificate is the highest form of recognition in the area of governmental accounting and financial reporting for state and local governments.

·      Truckee High School Principal John Carlson will be retiring at the end of the school year. Logan Mallonee, current assistant principal, will become the new principal of Truckee High beginning July 1.

·      The 8th annual charity golf tournament For the Kids hosted by Mike Tice, former head coach of the Minnesota Vikings and more recently offensive line coach for the Oakland Raiders, will take place June 15-17. Funds raised will go toward building a clubhouse for the Boys & Girls Clubs of Western Nevada in the Carson Valley, which is currently located at Pau Wa Lu Middle School. For more info, go online.

·      Each week during the school year, Bread & Broth 4 Kids sends bags of food home with food insecure children for weekend nourishment. Stop by Grocery Outlet in South Lake Tahoe on May 19 from 10am-3pm to donate food from our wish list or help with a monetary donation so food may be purchased. 




Candidates’ forum for EDC District 5 candidates

Tahoe Regional Young Professionals will be hosting the four El Dorado County supervisor candidates in town hall next week.

It will be May 16 from 6-7:30 pm inside the Hotel Azure Tahoe located at 3300 Lake Tahoe Blvd., South Lake Tahoe.

The town hall will feature a moderated debate and audience Q&A directed at the four candidates running for District 5.. The four candidates include Kenny Curtzwiler, Sue Novasel, Norma Santiago, and Jeffrey Spencer.

·     On May 3, the Lake Tahoe Environmental Magnet School took first place in the 34th annual Kiwanis/Katey Fagan Spelling Bee. Participating schools were Tahoe Valley, Sierra House, Bijou Elementary and the magnet. All participants will go on to the countywide spelling bee on May 11 in Shingle Springs.

·      Tahoe Truckee Unified School District has been named a Green Ribbon School District for a second consecutive year. TTUSD is the only school district in California to be nominated by the state Superintendent Tom Torlakson to compete in the U.S. Department of Education Green Ribbon Schools recognition program, which honors schools that conserve resources while promoting health and environmental literacy. 

·      Every Thursday now through June 7, TINS will be leading morning bird walks in Incline Village. Meet at the village green.

·      Off Road Tahoe is the newest adventure company to hit North Lake Tahoe, specializing in guided backcountry tours in utility terrain vehicles.

·      Little Faith, California’s gospel-inspired soul music collective returns to the Valhalla Tahoe Art, Music and Theater Festival on June 22 at 7:30pm. Tickets are available online.




Comments being taken on Kings Beach Rec Area changes

California State Parks and the California Tahoe Conservancy are seeking public input until June 29 on the future of Kings Beach State Recreation Area.

In the next 20 years, the public agencies would like to add facilities such as an outdoor event stage, lakeside promenade and small administration building. There is also a proposal to relocate the pier, playground, picnic areas and basketball court, and modify the restrooms and parking areas. The current boat ramp would be replaced with a smaller, non-motorized lake access point.

Kings Beach SRA encompasses about 14 acres and provides public access to more than 1,000 feet of the Lake Tahoe shoreline.

·      South Lake Tahoe Mayor Wendy David’s May “conversation” will include guests Steve Nelson, with Caltrans, and Stan Hill, project manager for the Sierra Boulevard. The talk will be May 16 at 9am at the senior center.

·      Kingsbury General Improvement District is having a public hearing June 19 at 6pm regarding changes to water and sewer rates. The meeting will be at 255 Kingsbury Grade, Stateline.

Volunteers being sought to clean bike trails

The annual bike path clean up event is South Lake Tahoe is June 12 from 5-6:30pm, with a celebration afterward from 6:30-7:30pm.

Volunteers can meet at one of three locations throughout South Tahoe to pick up litter from the areas around the bike paths. All ages are welcome and all supplies will be provided

Volunteers are encouraged to ride their bike. Those who do will receive a raffle ticket for a chance to win a prize.
 
The event is organized through a partnership between the Lake Tahoe Bike Coalition, League to Save Lake Tahoe, Clean Tahoe, TRPA, and Vail EpicPromise.




Spring Cleanup day scheduled for S. Lake Tahoe

Clean Tahoe and the city of South Lake Tahoe are organizing the 3rd annual Spring Cleanup on May 12, 9am-noon.

Join friends and neighbors to work together to spruce up the town.Groups of volunteers are getting together to clean a number of areas, including Stateline, Ski Run, Al Tahoe, Bijou, Tahoe Sierra/Sierra Tract, Tahoe Island, and the Y.
