• South Tahoe Police Chief Brian Uhler will take on the role of running the fire department Sept. 1 when Fire Chief Lorenzo Gigliotti leaves the department. The appointment will be for up to one year at a savings of about $200,000 to the city.

South Lake Tahoe Senior Center is featuring a 17-piece Tahoe Dance Band on June 24 from 7:30–10pm.

• El Dorado County has a webpage devoted to the Lake Tahoe Boulevard project.

• Talking or texting while driving is now illegal in Nevada unless talking with a hands free device. Warnings will be given to begin with, with fines starting Jan. 1.

• North Lake Tahoe takes its music outdoors with a variety of concerts, headliners and festivals – all part of High Notes – North Tahoe’s Summerlong Music Series that runs through September.

• South Lake Tahoe Yacht Club’s annual Blessing of the Boats is June 26 at 10:45am at the end of the Tahoe Keys property owners’ pier.




Kingsbury Grade controlled burn to be reignited

U.S. Forest Service fuels management crews will resume prescribed fire operations today on Kingsbury Grade near South Benjamin. Operations will be conducted on small units and are expected to continue through the end of the week.

All prescribed fire operations are dependent on weather and available staffing.

Residents and visitors can expect to see smoke from this prescribed fire project area. Smoke management is part of every prescribed fire burn plan, and efforts will be taken to reduce actual or potential smoke impacts on community areas.




Meeting to discuss Bijou erosion project

South Lake Tahoe is having a meeting about the Bijou area erosion control project.

People are encouraged to ask city staff questions and express any concerns about the first phase.

The meeting is June 27 from 5:30-7:30pm at the South Lake Tahoe Senior Center, 3050 Lake Tahoe Blvd.

Dining out will help Humane Society

On June 23 from 5pm to closing a percentage of proceeds from any item on the Coyote Grill menu in the Round Hill shopping center will go to support Lake Tahoe Humane Society and SPCA programs for California and Nevada animals in need.

South Lake Tahoe is launching its Volunteer Corps.

The city will try to match people’s interests and talents to the needs in the community.

Opportunities include:

● Fingerprinting at police department

● Senior Center (office aide, painting, many opportunities)

● Code enforcement ranger

● Snow helpers

● Adopt-a-Drain

● Partners in parks

Pilot green waste program in Incline, Crystal Bay

Incline Village and Crystal Bay residents can participate in a green waste program this summer.

Waste Management’s pilot program is July 11-Oct. 28.

Residents must purchase approved recyclable green bags from Tahoe Supply Company or Ace Hardware in Incline Village. Customers may fill 12 bags without incurring an additional fee.

The plan is to take the waste to a regional biomass facility or chip it.

building• Owners of the Garfinkle building (former Mikasa site) are talking to South Lake Tahoe planning officials about a possible face-lift and roof on the Y eyesore. The owners are negotiating with a prospective tenant (who they won’t name until the lease is signed) to make the building suit the tenant’s needs. But right now it is just talk because the city has not received any applications.

• Squaw Valley’s Olympic Ice Pavilion has become the High Camp Roller Rink for the summer.

• Supreme Court Justice Antonin Scalia has Lake Tahoe, Geneva and Rome on his summer itinerary.

• Naked Fish, the sushi place, has an open building permit with South Lake Tahoe to expand into the old Alpen Sierra coffee house site.
