• The International Olympic Committee announced halfpipe skiing and women’s ski jumping will be on the schedule of the 2014 Winter Games in Sochi, Russia.

• More than 100 CrossFit members from Northern California and Nevada will compete to find the world’s strongest man and woman. The benefit, which is scheduled from 8am to 5pm on April 16, will be staged at South Tahoe CrossFit at 2050 Dunlap St. in South Lake Tahoe.

• Be aware of a telephone scam targeting seniors in which the perpetrators falsely declare their grandchildren have been arrested, the Douglas County Sheriff’s Department is warning.

• “Eating Well the Vegetarian Way” is the subject of a talk on April 27 at 6:30pm at the El Dorado County Library in South Lake Tahoe by Lynn Norton, a registered dietician with 25 years under her belt. Norton will discuss various vegetarian diets, as well as their health benefits and potential risks. The program, which is sponsored by the Friends of the Library, is free. Cycling lecture in South Tahoe part of Amgen events

“10 days to Amgen” Pedaling to Peak Performance Lecture is May 12 from 6-8pm at Embassy Suites Lake Tahoe, 4130 Lake Tahoe Blvd., South Lake Tahoe.

In mid-May, thousands will be pouring into the Lake Tahoe region for the start of the Amgen Tour of California, the largest bike race in the nation. To help kick-off this event, Barton Health will have an informative cycling lecture by physical therapist Jason Collin, avid cyclist, certified strength, conditioning and bike fitting specialist during the “10 Days to Amgen” series.

The lecture — designed for cycling athletes of all levels – focuses on increasing pedaling efficacy and power, improving handling performance, decreasing overuse injuries and saddle soreness, as well as reducing or eliminating back, neck and knee pain. Additionally, the lecture will feature a stretching and nutrition components to aid in maximizing bicycling performance.

The lecture is free and open to the public.

ltusd•Lake Tahoe Unified School District is becoming an AVID district. Now all students in grades 4, 5, and 6 will have the opportunity to learn communication skills, educational self-advocacy, study skills, mental and physical organization within agenda/planner, organizational tools, time management, goal setting, note-taking strategies with an emphasis on writing to learn, inquiry, collaboration, organization, and reading to learn in all content areas.

A tourism forum featuring the AMGEN bike event is scheduled at the Horizon Casino April 14 at 5:30pm. Topics to be discussed will be AMGEN, the Highway 50 closure and other events. The event is organized through the Lake Tahoe South Shore Chamber of Commerce.

Local historian Carol Etten will discuss steam-powered marine transportation in Lake Tahoe for an Explore Tahoe free talk scheduled for April 7 at 6pm at the Heavenly Village, Stateline Transit Center.

• The comment period for the Homewood Mountain Resort draft environmental impact report was granted a 30-day extension by the Tahoe Regional Planning Agency, extending the document’s comment period to April 21.

• The California Board of Equalization would like to remind those who are filing their taxes by April 18 to report and pay the use tax, which is what is owed by the consumers on items purchased from out-of-state retailers that don’t collect sales tax. These include purchases on the Internet, mail order or via telephone.

• Pineapple Hospitality, which sells green hotel products to 968 Park Hotel in South Lake Tahoe, is the first company in the hospitality industry to ship exclusively using UPS’s carbon neutral program.

• Douglas County’s main jail in Minden, built in 1980, is getting a $3.9 million overhaul and expansion that should be finished later this spring.

Barton Health_2• Barton Health’s staff and administration filled the Snowflake Lounge at Barton Memorial Hospital this week as they presented hospitalist Dr. Stefan Schunk with the “Doctor of the Year” award. Dr. Clint Purvance, Barton’s chief medical officer, presented Schunk with a commemorative plaque on Thursday.

• Barton is hosting a free family day at the South Tahoe Middle School multipurpose room on April 30 from 11am to 3pm. The event features 30 interactive health-related activities and screenings by Barton Health and other local health-related businesses and nonprofits. • A.S.A. High Sierra Softball registration is taking signups for girls and boys ages 4-1/2 to 16 years old on April 7 at the South Lake Tahoe Recreation Center at 5:30pm.

• South Lake Tahoe AAUW will host Dr. Jennifer Norris, a family medicine practitioner with Alpine Family Practice and Barton Memorial Hospital who is also trained in acupuncture.  Norris will discuss her understanding of the practice and its place in medical care on April 9 at 10 am at the Aspen Room, Lake Tahoe Community College. • Northstar’s Tahoe Cross Country Center, which will be open through May 1, invites the public to ski with Olympians on April 14. A masters clinic is planned for 1:30-3pm and the juniors version at 3:30pm. On hand will be three U.S. skiers who compete at the World and Olympic level: Kikkan Randall, Kris Freeman, and Andy Newell. Cost is $40 per person plus afternoon trail pass. • The Wild & Scenic Film Festival On Tour at the Tahoe Center for Environmental Sciences on April 19 and Resort at Squaw Creek on April 22. Each screening offers a unique package of films and will begin at 7pm.  The festival was started by the watershed advocacy group, the South Yuba River Citizens League (SYRCL) in 2003. • Two new boutique style movie theaters have just opened in the Village at Northstar on Copper Lane near the entrance to the Village at Northstar across from TC’s Pub.  The Village Cinemas feature two screens, with one containing 96 elevated stadium seats and the second containing 45 elevated stadium seats. barber•El Dorado County Office of Education Superintendent Vicki Barber won the Ferd. Kiesel Memorial Distinguished Service Award from the Association of California School Administrators. This is the highest honor ACSA can present to an individual.

• One day golf season might arrive in Lake Tahoe. Here are some things to think about: Nearly 40,000 golfers are admitted to emergency rooms every year after being injured at play, according to Golf Digest’s website. The Consumer Products Safety Commission reports that approximately 15,000 golf cart-related injuries require emergency room treatment every year.

• Be aware — South Lake Tahoe Police and California Highway Patrol will join 225 other local agencies through April in cracking down on distracted drivers. Cellular telephone use has contributed to a number of incidents since their inception. Tickets for violating the hands free or no texting law costs a minimum of $159. The crackdown will start April 4.

• Wildland Fire Safety and Hand Crew Operations is a weeklong class scheduled from April 4-8 at Lake Tahoe Community College. The instructor is Keegan Schafer (kschafer@tahoefire.com), crew supervisor with Tahoe Douglas Fire Protection District.

Electric company plans open house

South Lake Tahoe’s new electricity purveyor, Liberty Energy-California Pacific Electric Company, is hosting an open house for its customer base on April 4.

The ribbon-cutting presentation sponsored by the Lake Tahoe South Shore Chamber of Commerce is scheduled for 11am at 933 Eloise Ave. KTHO’s Paul Middlebrook will broadcast from the site.

Hours of operation are set for Monday through Friday from 8am to 5pm.

Liberty Energy recently took over the South Shore’s approximately 48,000 California customers from Sierra Pacific Power based in Reno.

With the Tahoe Area Mountain Bike Association in the process of being reformed, TAMBA is sponsoring a two day visit by the IMBA Trail Care Crew for a series of presentations running from April 8-10.

• Minden-Tahoe Airport Manager Bobbi Thompson has been nominated for the General Aviation Airport Manager of the Year award by the National Air Transportation Association. She is one of six people in the United States nominated for the award. The winner will be announced later this spring.




Class to drive smart at the start

A free driver safety course aimed at helping newly licensed and upcoming teenager drivers is available through the California Highway Patrol.

With teenage drivers are injured and dying at an alarming rate, officers will review ways to avoid accidents.
