Annual forest stewardship day on Sept. 11

Volunteer for the 13th annual Tahoe Forest Stewardship Day on Sept. 11 at North Tahoe Regional Park.

Join hundreds of volunteers to help restore forest ecosystems, alpine meadows, creeks and streams, and improve water quality.

Learn about forest and fire ecology, defensible space, wildlife, invasive species, and hydrology.

Volunteers and team leaders are needed.

Goldman to speak at Soroptimist day after enviro summit

Charles Goldman will be the guest speaker on Aug. 18 at noon during Soroptimist International of South Lake Tahoe’s lunch meeting at Harrah’s Lake Tahoe.

Goldman, a world renowned limnologist and founder of the UC Davis Tahoe Research Group, hosted the inaugural Lake Tahoe Environmental Summit in 1997 with then President Bill Clinton and Vice President Al Gore..

He designed Nevada’s first and longest-running college online course in grant writing in 1997 and the 10-credit Grant Writing Certification program at Truckee Meadows Community College in 2001.

Bijou Bash looking for vendors

Space is still available to be vendors at the Bijou Bash on Sept. 11.

The event is from 1-4pm at Bijou Community Park off Al Tahoe Boulevard in South Lake Tahoe.

Admission is free.

There will be a kids fun zone, stage performances, farmers market, arts and crafts, local businesses, bike valet and more.

11 candidates vie for 3 South Tahoe council seats

South Lake Tahoe voters will have 11 names to choose from for the three open City Council seats on the Nov. 2 ballot.

south tahoeThe candidates are Tom Davis, Angela Swanson, Georg May, Claire Fortier, Joy Curry, Steve Kubby, Adrian Gooch, Elizabeth Hallen, Dough Cichowicz, Alice Jones and Clint Schue.

No one challenged the incumbents for city clerk or treasurer, Suzie Alessi and David Olivo.




Mosquito Road Bridge off-limits for 2 months

The Mosquito Road Bridge over the South Fork American River in El Dorado County will be continuously closed for major maintenance from Aug. 16 through Oct. 22.

Rock Creek Road remains open to traffic and is the designated detour route. Mosquito Road north to Sand Mountain Boulevard will remain available as a secondary emergency evacuation route.

The bridge will undergo an extensive replacement of structural members and be closed to all traffic during this time period.

LTCC’s summer Spanish institute garners state recognition

Nancy Zarenda from the California Department of Education this week presented Lake Tahoe Community College’s Intensive Spanish Summer Institute with letters of recognition from Lt. Gov. Abel Maldonado.

The institute at LTCC, which is in its 17th year, is hosting more than 450 students for a week of intensive study of the Spanish language and culture. Students come from around the country to participate and earn college credit.
