• IZ Xtreme is a free immunization program for sixth-grade students in participating El Dorado County schools. The vaccines, designed for pre-teens, are given at the school during school hours. Kung FLU-Fighters provides flu vaccine for students in grades K-5 and 7-8 in participating El Dorado County schools. • El Dorado Beach in South Lake Tahoe will be closed starting Aug. 11 as the Lakeview Commons project begins. Regan Beach, a short ways down Lakeview Avenue, is open. In October officials will decide if the area will be closed all winter. Completion of this first phase is expected next summer.

• Paul Reder and Tony Clark on Aug. 4 received producer of the year awards by the International Magician Society, the world’s largest organization for this genre, before the Masters of Magic show at MontBleu.

• The August issue of Outside magazine calls Reno the best city for whitewater.

• Tom Stienstra, San Francisco Chronicle outdoors writer, calls the Tahoe Bike Trail the worst bike trail in Northern California. He did not respond to an email from LTN asking for his definition of the trail, but based on his July 29 column it sounds like it is the ride around Lake Tahoe. Hard to argue with his conclusion.

• Trading Places International will oversee all operations of David Walley’s Hot Springs Resort in Genoa. The resort’s restaurant that has been closed since last year may reopen in the fall.




Tahoe Area Sierra Club fundraiser

On Aug. 13 from 5-7pm at Aspen Hollow Nursery at 541 Emerald Bay Road in South Lake Tahoe there will be a Garden Party sponsored by the Tahoe Area Sierra Club and the nursery.

Proceeds benefit the Sierra Club’s efforts to protect Lake Tahoe.

Library book sale in Zephyr Cove

The Zephyr Cove branch of the Douglas County Public Library is having a book sale in the meeting room during regular library hours. Used books, VHS tapes, DVDs, and audio books will be on sale Aug. 13 and Aug. 14 from 9am-5pm.

Training for dogs adopted from shelter

Tahoe Best Friends is offering a free one-hour training session for recently adopted puppies or dogs with proof of adoption from the shelter. Adoption must be within 60 days of the class.

Learn how to integrate your dog into your home, receive training tips and get answers to your questions.

The classes are Aug. 19 from 6-7pm and Sept. 16 from 6-7pm.

10th person takes out papers for SLT council race

South Lake Tahoe City Council candidates Joy Curry and Georg May have officially qualified for the Nov. 2 ballot.

Alice H. Jones has taken out papers, which brings the number of potential candidates to 10. People have until Aug. 11 to file for the three seats being vacated by Kathay Lovell, Bill Crawford and Jerry Birdwell.

City Clerk Susan Alessi has officially qualified for the ballot as well.




Caregiving class in South Tahoe

Caregiving is a difficult and often challenging role that one can undertake, and taking the opportunity to share information and feel connected to others who are providing care is a vital step to perform this task to the best of your ability. Take the opportunity on Aug. 12 from 5:30pm to 7:30pm at South Lake Tahoe Senior Center, 3050 Highway 50, South Lake Tahoe to become connected and rejuvenated at your local support group.

Krissi Russell, local author, presents an interactive nature and music program on Aug. 14 at 2pm at Explore Tahoe in South Lake Tahoe.

Gina Stowell, local artist offers face painting designs for all ages. Face painting designs range from $3 to $10 depending on design.

• Ta-Hoe Nalu 2010 Paddle Festival is Aug. 21-22 in Kings Beach with its $20,000 in cash and prizes, six races, luau and live concert. This is an event for athletes, as well as spectators and families.

• South Tahoe City Councilman Bruce Grego at a July meeting said people who frequent medicinal marijuana collectives don’t appear to need the drug. He determined this by sitting in his car. The same car for which he has a disabled placard that he uses all over town, including at city offices, to park in the blue curb slot. He has no visible disability.




Lake Tahoe Boulevard detour in Angora burn area

El Dorado County Department of Transportation are about to install pipes that will cross Angora Creek between Angora Creek Road and Mount Rainier Drive.

This segment of Lake Tahoe Boulevard will be closed Aug. 12-Sept. 20.

Drivers, and probably cyclists, should use View Circle to access the Y or North Upper Truckee Road.
