• The trial for Larry Brown, the former South Tahoe High security guard accused of furnishing marijuana to a 16-year-old female student, will begin Aug. 4.

• Incline Village is downscaling a bit with a Circle K opening soon on the corner of Highway 28 and Northwood Boulevard.

• Capisce restaurant will open soon in Zephyr Cove at the intersection of Highway 50 and Elks Point Road.

• Après Wine Company in the Ski Run Center in South Tahoe is serving lunch from noon-4pm, Monday-Saturday.




Benefit performance of ‘Footloose’ at LTCC

On June 18 there will be a special benefit performance of “Footloose” at Lake Tahoe Community College.

It will be a fundraiser supporting the purchase of a grand piano for the music department.

Tickets are $20 per person and guests will enjoy food and beverages before the show beginning at 7:30pm. The performance begins at 8pm.




Soroptimist reward young readers

Awards were presented to students at Zephyr Cove Elementary School this month to acknowledge their efforts and achievement in reading.

Soroptimist International of Tahoe Sierra rewarded recipients at an end of the year awards assembly by highlighting each child’s favorite book and also sharing endorsements by teachers. Each child was presented with gift cards to purchase books and new novels were donated to the school Library in honor of Hannia Lucero-Castro, Luke Borchers, Diane Clavel and Angelica Acosta-Das.

Build a rocket at Zephyr Cove library

The Douglas County Public Library in Zephyr Cove is sponsoring a special summer reading program on June 25 at 1:30pm.

Children ages 6 and up will build a water bottle rocket and launch it. Awards will be given for the highest flyer, farthest flight and coolest design.

Bring two 2-liter plastic bottles and three small personal-size water bottles clean and dry with labels removed for rocket building. Sign up by June 24 to participate.

Support group for caregivers

Caregiving is a difficult and often challenging role that one can undertake, and taking the opportunity to share information and feel connected to others who are providing care is a vital step to perform this task to the best of your ability. Take the opportunity on July 8 from 5:30-7:30pm at South Lake Tahoe Senior Center 3050 Highway 50, South Lake Tahoe to become connected and rejuvenated at your local support group.

Refreshments will be served.

CPR class in South Lake

BLS CPR class on July 12 from 5:30–9:00pm. Cost is $50 for this one evening class. Fee includes manual.

This course is geared for the general public, covering the 30:2 CPR for adults, children and infants, AED, airway, masks and choking.

With successful completion, students will receive a two-year CPR certificate.

wine sign• Synapse Wines opened a tasting room in Placerville off Highway 50 next to the Cary House Hotel at 304 Main St. Synapse Wines is locally and family owned, with its vineyard in Somerset.

• Nevada Division of Wildlife officials have killed eight bears this season. The norm is one or two. Snow in higher elevations is bring them down into populated areas of the Lake Tahoe Basin. A plethora of bear cubs were reportedly born over the winter.

• The 5.8-mile scenic loop at Mammoth is getting a $4.9 million overhaul from Qualcon Contractors Inc. The Carson Valley firm expects to use two dozen people from the region on the job this summer.

ESPN The Magazine named Truckee’s Matt Gelso to the first-team Academic All-District at-large team. Gelso is graduating from the University of Colorado and is a standout cross country skier.

• Highway 132 in Mariposa County has been designated the John Muir Highway. It closely follows his path into Yosemite.

• Swimmers are advised by the National Weather Service to “think before you sink.” Rivers in California and Nevada are running extremely fast. The temperature of many bodies of water in the Sierra is in the 40s.
