Checkpoint ends with 4 DUI arrests

South Lake Tahoe police officers along with the California Highway Patrol made four driving under the influence arrests May 5.

The sobriety checkpoint in town also netted four arrests for driving without a license or with a suspended license.

The next checkpoint will be Memorial Day weekend.




Alzheimer’s class

On May 14 from 8am-4pm at Green Valley Community Church in Placerville the public is invited to learn about Alzheimer’s disease – its warning signs, who’s at risk, what treatments are available and how to cope with the unique behaviors associated with the disease from the top experts in the field.

Because of a grant from Marshall Foundation for Community Health, the registration fee is just $10 ($20 at the door) and includes a continental breakfast, lunch, snacks, and all conference materials.

Five hours of continuing education units are available for most professions for only $10. Sugar pine planting in Zephyr Cove

Help the Sugar Pine Foundation plant fungus-resistant sugar pine seedlings in Zephyr Cove on May 1.

Meet at the Zephyr Cove Library (233 Warrior Way, Zephyr Cove) at 10am.

Planting instruction, seedlings, tools and refreshments will be provided. If you can, bring your own trowel or a shovel. Kids are welcome.

The event will run from approximately 10am-noon.

The Sugar Pine Foundation is a South Lake Tahoe-based nonprofit organization that is working to restore white pines in the Tahoe basin and surrounding areas. Tahoe’s white pines are threatened by a nonnative, incurable fungus called white pine blister rust. The Sugar Pine Foundation finds trees that are resistant to the fungus and plants their progeny.

LT Ed Foundation’s Celebration of Education

Lake Tahoe Educational Foundation’s annual Celebration of Education is May 20 at the grand Construction, Arts and Transportation Academy at South Tahoe High School. The public is invited.

The reception will begin at 5:30pm in honor of the Lake Tahoe Unified School District retirees, plus preview tours of the new building.

Food will be served by the culinary arts students of STHS.

Entertainment will include the Blue Ribbon Choir from STHS and the Tahoe Belles from STMS, both conducted by Paul Kushner, plus other musicians from the district’s bands and orchestras. There also will be a student art exhibit.

Tickets are $25 and must be purchased by May 12. They are available online.
