TRAILS at the Lake fundraiser

TRAILS at the Lake, a local nonprofit dedicated to supporting people with disabilities in their quest to find and maintain work which helps them to grow their self-worth and become productive members of our community, is being honored by Coyote Grill on April 1 by receiving 20 percent of the profits from 5-10pm.

This includes everything from Coyote Grill’s famous $1 chili to any of their other menu items.

Coyote Grill is in the Round Hill Center near Safeway.




Limited library hours on April 9 in Douglas County

The Douglas County Public Library in Minden and Zephyr Cove will close at noon on April 9 to salute their volunteers.

Approximately 120 volunteers assist the library on a yearly basis.

The Minden library will re-open at 10am and the Zephyr Cove library at 9am April 10.

South Shore Earth Day events

Lake Tahoe Community College is one location for several Earth Day events on the South Shore.

The first event is April 9 at 7pm — an environmental film festival. For more details, click film.

USFS control burn on North Shore

U.S. Forest Service fuels management crews will conduct prescribed fire operations in the Mt. Rose area, off Highway 431, beginning March 27.

Operations are expected to continue through the weekend and the following week as weather and staffing allow.

Residents and travelers can expect to see smoke from prescribed fire project areas. Be aware that other fire protection agencies, state and local, may also be conducting prescribed fire operations during this time.

This and other prescribed fire projects are designed to reduce wildfire risks to communities and critical resources. Smoke management is part of every prescribed fire burn plan, and efforts will be taken to reduce actual or potential smoke impacts on community areas.

• SAFE Credit Union is offering $1,000 scholarships to students in the counties of El Dorado, Placer, Nevada, Amador, Sacramento, Yolo, Yuba, Sutter, Butte, Contra Costa, San Joaquin and Solano. Applications are due April 5. They are available at branches and here.

• Party Place, a one-stop shop for party needs, is going into the Factory Stores at the Y in South Lake.

• Artemis Mediterranean Grill is opening in the Kings Trading Post center in South Tahoe.

• Lake Tahoe USD’s Destination Imagination Team placed second in the regional tournament and is going to state in San Jose on April 10. This is the third year that this team has been together, having placed fourth at state in 2009. The team is seventh-graders Alexis Maya, Samantha Buscher, Kellen Gronwold, sixth-graders Bailey Barcellos, Scott Carlson, and fifth-graders Meg Carlson and Kamren Gronwold.

• Brooks Martin of South Lake Tahoe was named doctor of the year by Barton Memorial Hospital employees.

The Ski Run Boulevard Beautification Committee walked the boulevard this week to discuss ways to make this area of South Lake Tahoe look better.

Traffic light issue in South Tahoe

fairwayTraffic is a bit clogged at the intersection of Highway 50 and Fairway Avenue in South Lake Tahoe because the light is out. Stop signs are up to make it a four-way stop, but they are low to the ground and hard to see.

Library book sale in South Tahoe

The Friends of the Library Spring Book Sale is March 27 from 10am-3pm at the library at 1000 Rufus Allen Blvd., South Lake Tahoe.

All proceeds benefit programs sponsored by Friends of the Library.

“Member Hour” is 9-10am. If you haven’t joined the Friends, you may do so that morning. Membership is $10 per year.
