Limited spring hours at Lake Tahoe Museum

Lake Tahoe Museum in South Lake Tahoe will be closed most of April.

It will be open April 2-3 from 11am-3pm.

It will be open every Friday and Saturday from 11am-3pm from April 30-May 30.

Exhibits are being mounted in preparation for the summer season.

El Dorado County sheriff’s Sgt. Matt Underhill took gold at the 5th annual Ryan Shreve Memorial Ski Race at Sierra-at-Tahoe on March 17. Like Shreve, Underhill graduated from South Tahoe High.

A sign the economy may be picking up — Martis Camp in Truckee expects to build more than 20 houses this year. In 2009, 12 were built.

Lake Tahoe Museum in South Tahoe recently received two unique donations. John Marker donated a bathtub that may be from the old Sierra House. A 50-piece, 17-foot wooden kayak from the 1940s was assembled my museum volunteers.

Megan Hicks, a South Tahoe High grad, is headed to the Peace Corps.




Ski Run Beautification Committee meeting

The Ski Run Beautification Committee has organized a Street Walk to gather ideas and solutions for ways to improve and enhance the aesthetics and functionality of the district.

* Meet at the Alder Inn on Ski Run Boulevard, South Tahoe

* March 23 before 10am

The group will leave the Alder Inn at 10am and walk toward Pioneer Trail, looping back down toward the marina and back to the inn.




‘Fresh’ to be aired in Tahoe City

Slow Food Lake Tahoe will show the movie “Fresh” on March 22 at 6:30pm at Sawtooth Ridge, 877 N. Lake Blvd., Tahoe City.

“Fresh” celebrates the farmers, thinkers and business people across America who are forging healthier, sustainable alternatives to bringing food to the table.

A discussion will follow the movie.

Truckee Unified career day for juniors

With the goal of helping local high school juniors maximize their chance of success beyond high school, Truckee Rotary has revamped this year’s Rotary Resource & Career Day to create an event that is bigger and better than before.

All 300 juniors in the Tahoe Truckee Unified School District are invited to attend the Resource & Career Day at the North Tahoe Event Center in Kings beach on March 19 starting at 7:45am. The new format features 10 topics essential to juniors and their families, as they transition into their senior year and begin focusing on life after high school.

Topics such as “What’s Hot” (in the job market), “Show Me the Money” (college funding and scholarships), “Other Options with a Purpose” (Peace Corps, Job Corps), vocational programs, and dual credit enrollment and personal development programs will be featured.

Sierra College and Sierra Nevada College representatives will be present to answer questions about career training and educational degree options.

Prescribed burn on South Shore

USFSU.S. Forest Service Fuels Management Crews will be conducting prescribed fire operations in the upper Kingsbury Grade beginning March 17.

Operations will continue through the week. Approximately 21 acres will be treated in the Upper Kingsbury and North Benjamin areas.

Residents and travelers can expect to see smoke from prescribed fire project areas.

This and other prescribed fire projects are designed to reduce wildfire risks to communities and critical resources. Smoke management is part of every prescribed fire burn plan, and efforts will be taken to reduce actual or potential smoke impacts on community areas.




Tahoe Turning Point open house

The board of directors of Tahoe Turning Point Inc. is having an open house March 18 from 5:30-7:30pm.

The group is expanding its expertise to offer Outpatient Services (Mental Health and Drug & Alcohol) to the community of South Lake Tahoe. Tahoe Turning Point will be providing intense outpatient counseling which will include individual counseling weekly, group counseling weekly, and parenting classes. This also will include random drug testing. All ages are served. serving all ages. Counseling for mental health and substance abuse is available..
