Bowls of chili benefit CASA

On March 4 from 5-10pm Coyote Grill will serve $1 bowls of chili with proceeds going to CASA.

The restaurant is in the Round Hill center by Safeway.

CASA will be sharing information about is upcoming new advocate training that begins March 9.

Gas station’s groundwater permit up for renewal

Interested parties have until March 26 to comment on whether Mike’s Gas-A-Mart on Kingsbury Grade in Stateline should have its groundwater discharge permit renewed.

Since 1995 the station has operated a groundwater remediation system to address a previous release of gasoline. Remediation includes groundwater extraction, air stripping and carbon absorption. Treated groundwater is then discharged into the Douglas County Sewer and Improvement District’s system for further treatment.

The 14th Annual Mow Down event where El Dorado County residents are eligible to trade in their old gasoline mower and purchase a reduced-priced cordless mower is March 27.

Major fundraiser for Special Olympics

Hollywood celebrities and U.S. Olympians will meet up with business leaders and Special Olympics athletes for Celebrity Winterfest in a day of alpine racing at Diamond Peak Ski Resort and a weekend of community activities at Incline Village, Marc 5-7

This is the 14th Special Olympics Celebrity Winterfest, the largest single Special Olympics fundraising event in Northern California and Nevada. Proceeds provide funding for more than 17,000 developmentally disabled athletes across Northern California and Nevada to receive free sports training and competition opportunities throughout the year.

Forest Service buying land in LT Basin

USFSThe U.S. Forest Service expects to acquire several acres of sensitive land in the Lake Tahoe Basin this year.

Three parcels are in the Tahoe Mountain area on the South Shore that total 9.39 acres. Near Cave rock are 18 acres that will be purchased.

The price will be based on fair market value.

These acquisitions are part of the Santini-Burton Act.

A 40-acre site, also near Cave Rock, will be bought with Southern Nevada Public Lands Management Act funds.

• St. Pauli Inn’s owners are trying to sell the business after nearly nine years of ownership. The Highway 50 eatery opened in 1986. The restaurant has been closed since December when the pipes froze.

• Lake Tahoe Community College’s Geology Club has raised about $1,600 for Haiti relief.

• On June 10, American Eagle, an affiliate of American Airlines, will begin nonstop service between Los Angeles and Reno-Tahoe international airports.

• Lake Tahoe Community College students are planning to be part of the March to March event in Sacramento on March 22 to demand the state’s politicians fully fund higher education.

• Placerville’s City Council voted 4-1 on Feb. 23 to allow two buildings from the 1850s, including the former home of the Hangman’s Tree Bar, to be leveled.

• Assemblyman Ted Gaines, R—Roseville, introduced AB2704 on Feb. 25 to protect snow removal funding in the South Lake Tahoe and Truckee areas.

Natalie Cole to perform at LT Music Festival

The 28th season of the Lake Tahoe Music Festival gears up for its concert series with the first artist announcement, Natalie Cole performing Aug. 5 at Northstar-At-Tahoe.

Combining R&B, jazz and pop sounds, the nine-time Grammy Award-winner joins the summer festival’s six-concert season taking place July 22–Aug. 7 at venues throughout north Lake Tahoe and Truckee.

El Dorado County seeks grant to upgrade Rubicon Trail

The El Dorado County Department of Transportation and El Dorado County Sheriff’s Department are applying to the California Department of Parks and Recreation, Off-Highway Motor Vehicle Recreation Division for the 2009-10 grants program for funding of projects on the Rubicon Trail.

The 30-day public review and comment period for the 2009-10 Grants and Cooperative Agreement Program begins March 2 and ends April 5. This period provides an opportunity for the public to review the preliminary applications submitted to the OHMVR Division for consideration during the current grant cycle.

Mancuso to show off Olympic hardware at Northstar

North Lake Tahoe native Julia Mancuso, with two silver medals and a possible third, will be at Northstar-at-Tahoe Feb. 28 at 4pm to celebrate her success at the 2010 Winter Games in Vancouver.

To honor Mancuso’s success and celebrate the domination of U.S. athletes at the 2010 Winter Games, Northstar Resort will host Jo Mama on the village stage in the early afternoon and then Colorshow, a Tahoe band with deep ties to Mancuso, in the early evening.

Mancuso will offer a greeting in the Village at Northstar in between the two shows and will then relax and enjoy the music with the crowd.

There will also be a raffle with all proceeds benefiting Mancuso’s Snow We Livin Foundation, a nonprofit whose mission is Fun, Focus, Fitness and Well-Being for Life. Mancuso branded merchandise will also be for sale.
