STR collecting tires for free

tiresThrough June 30, South Tahoe Refuse in South Lake Tahoe will dispose of used tires on the first and third Saturdays of each month. This is open to El Dorado County residents.

The service is provided through a grant from the California Integrated Waste Management Board.

A limit of nine tires can be recycled per vehicle, none will be accepted from a business, no rims will be accepted and no large equipment tires accepted.

Animal shelter needs supplies

El Dorado County Animal Control’s needs expand in the cold weather. The agency could use: blankets, towels, cat beds, kitty litter, dog beds, cat food and more.

Plenty of animals are at the South Tahoe facility to adopt. For more information, click here.

USFS looking for employees

USFSThe U.S. Forest Service Lake Tahoe Basin Management Unit (LTBMU) is offering free job workshops to assist people interested in working for the agency. The workshops will be at Lake Tahoe Community College in South Lake Tahoe, Room L-107, on Feb. 16 from noon-1pm and 5-6pm.

The workshops will explain the seasonal employment opportunities available for 2010 other opportunities with the LTBMU. Those attending will learn where to find information on job postings, the steps on how to apply for federal positions, and some tips on navigating through the “AVUE” and USAjobs websites.

Snowshoe Thompson presentation

On Feb. 18at 6pm Explore Tahoe Visitor Center presents Nina MacLeod and Sue Knight from Friends of Snowshoe Thompson.

The two will tell the story of the legendary mailman of the Sierra Nevada in the The Life and Adventures of Snowshoe Thompson.

This program is free and refreshments will be provided.

Caltrans seeks comments on Hwy. 89 project

caltransComments are being taken until Feb. 26 regarding a water quality project Caltrans wants to do on Highway 89 on the South Shore on land owned by the U.S. Forest Service.

The project requires a highway easement of 40 feet on either side of the center line.

“The proposed highway easement is not expected to adversely affect the activities, features and attributes of the U.S. Forest Service Pope-Baldwin Recreation Area,” Caltrans documents state.

NBC promising 1,000s of hours of Olympic coverage

vanolyThe Olympics are the biggest media event in the world, with more than 10,000 accredited journalists and broadcasters following the action in Vancouver and Whistler.

NBC and its sister networks will be bringing hundreds of hours of coverage to the United States. The network says to expect more live coverage than ever. Coverage will be on TV and NBCOlympics.com.

Plus, Universal Sports TV and UniversalSports.com will be bringing daily news coverage live from Vancouver for the most in-depth overall coverage of any Olympics in history.

The USSA’s partner Yahoo will also be in Vancouver in force, and is expected to have one of the most heavily-trafficed Web sites in the world during the Games.

• One of two drive-through car washes in South Lake Tahoe has what looks to be yellow crime tape keeping people off the property. But no crime has occurred. City officials haven’t heard a word from the operators nor did they have a contact number for the business.

• Melody Rebbeck has joined the Tahoe Maritime Museum in Homewood as exhibits and marketing associate.

• Longtime manager of Raley’s at the Y in South Lake Tahoe Bob Lear is now running the Carson City store. Seth McGrath took Lear’s place.

• NV Energy Inc. (locally known as Sierra Pacific Power) needs a CFO. Chief Financial Officer and Treasurer William D. Rogers resigned this month.

• The Food Bank of Northern Nevada, which helps those in need on both sides of the South Shore, was one of 26 to receive the national Victory Against Hunger Award. The honor is for its efforts to end hunger, and improve nutrition and health.

• Kohl’s Department Stores Inc. bought the former Mervyn’s location in Carson City for $4 million. Mervyn’s closed in 2008. Kohl’s could open this year.




St. Theresa School fending off rumors of its demise

Danette Winslow was making the rounds Tuesday to quash the rumor her school is closing.

The principal of St. Theresa Catholic School in South Lake Tahoe told the City Council and Lake Tahoe Unified School District board the K-8 school is staying open. She has also been to talking to other groups to quiet the gossip mill.
